West Bengal, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Manipur are yet to submit proposal while five states and 1 UT have withdrawn from the scheme, government tells Lok Sabha.
113 new nursing colleges have been proposed and approved across India under the scheme for establishment of 157 new Colleges of Nursing (CoN) in co-location with medical colleges, Minister of State (MoS) for health and family welfare Anupriya Patel told Parliament in a written response.
In four states including Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Punjab, and West Bengal, district colleges have been sanctioned, however, the state governments are yet to submit a proposal. Moreover, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir (except for one nursing college at Handwara), Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram have withdrawn from the scheme.
About the details of funds allocated, sanctioned, and released for each nursing college, the minister said that Rs 436.82 crore has been released. The government provides funds of Rs 10 crore per college including both central and state share, with a funding ratio of 90:10 for NE and special category states, 60:40 for other states, and 100% central funding for UTs without legislature. Of the total central share of Rs 1,016 crore under the scheme, Rs 436.82 crore has been released to the states and UTs, she informed.
Favouring the scheme, Patel said that co-location of the nursing institutions with the existing medical colleges facilitates optimal utilisation of infrastructure, faculty, skill labs and clinical resources. Moreover, the central scheme, originally approved for implementation during 2023-24 to 2025-26, has been granted an extension till 2026-27.
