ABVP sets up internal probe over assault on Ambedkar College professor; Deepika Jha asked to step aside

The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has set up an internal inquiry committee to investigate the violence against a professor at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar College. The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) joint secretary Deepika Jha has been asked to step aside temporarily from the post to ensure a fair inquiry.

The announcement comes a day after the Delhi University formed a six-member committee to investigate the assault on Sujit Kumar, a faculty member at BR Ambedkar College (BRAC). The panel will be headed by Neeta Sehgal, a professor in the Department of Zoology. The university has asked the committee to submit its report within two weeks.

Sujit Kumar was the convenor of a disciplinary committee which was looking into a violent incident involving ABVP members. Notably, the university conducted the DUSU elections 2025 just a month ago. Deepika Jha secured 21,825 votes and won the joint secretary position.

The incident took place on October 16, when Deepika Jha, along with 50 other members entered the college, and slapped the professor. Other students allegedly manhandled the teacher and pressured him to seek the resignation.

After the CCTV footage surfaced, the ABVP shifted its blame on the teacher and defended its member saying that it was a “momentary reaction” due to the continued “misbehavior” of the professor and police inaction.

The ABVP Delhi has formed an internal inquiry committee, which will investigate all the facts and submit its report. This is in addition to the panel formed by DU.

“ABVP also expects that the university administration should conduct an impartial investigation into the suspicious, anti-student, and contrary to the dignity of the teaching position of Professor Sujit Kumar in connection with the incident and that if found guilty, strict action should be taken against him as per the rules,” it added.
