CU, JU suspend academic activities following heavy rainfall; schools to remain closed on September 24, 25
Heavy overnight rain in Kolkata caused severe waterlogging and disrupted transport. Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College also remained closed. State schools will follow on September 24 and 25.
Calcutta University (CU) and Jadavpur University (JU) suspended all academic activities today, September 23, following heavy overnight rainfall in Kolkata. Authorities cited severe waterlogging, unsafe road conditions, and disruptions in public transport as primary reasons for the closures.
In a statement, CU’s Registrar said the semester examinations scheduled for various subjects on September 23 have been cancelled due to extensive waterlogging in different parts of the city. The university added that revised exam dates will be announced later.
“Due to rain, waterlogging at Rajabazar Science College Campus and unavailability of Resource persons, Induction class of B.Tech 1st year is suspended on 23.09.2025 (Tuesday),” the official notice further said.
Jadavpur University: Third-Year UG, PG special exams deferred
Jadavpur University issued a notice stating that all academic activities have been suspended for the day due to the intense rainfall that occurred from late Monday night into early Tuesday morning. The university states that PhD interviews and PRC meetings across the Pharmaceutical Technology, Electrical Engineering and other departments scheduled for September 23 have been cancelled or postponed.
In addition, special examinations for third-year UG and PG students, student induction programmes, and walk-in interviews for guest faculty in the Department of Adult, Continuing Education & Extension have also been deferred.
Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College has also announced that the institution would remain closed on September 23, 2025, due to rainfall, communication problems, and safety concerns. “Due to continuous heavy rainfall and the resulting disruption in normal communication and safety concerns, the college will remain closed on 23rd September, 2025 (Tuesday),” it said.
According to PTI report, the rain has caused widespread disruption in Kolkata, affecting transport services and normal city life. At least four people are reported killed due to electrocution caused by the downpour.

State Schools to remain closed on September 24, 25
Educational institutions, including Primary, Upper Primary, Secondary, and Higher Secondary schools, have either suspended classes or postponed examinations to ensure the safety of students, staff, and faculty members.
Further, the West Bengal School Education Department has announced that all government, government-aided, and sponsored schools in the state, except those in hill areas, will remain closed on September 24 and 25 due to heavy rainfall and forecasts of continued adverse weather.
“Considering the heavy rainfall last night and due to the forecast of inclement weather for next two days, it has been decided by the competent authority that all the Government /Government Aided/Sponsored, Primary, Upper Primary, Secondary, Higher Secondary, Educational institutions in the state (except Hill areas) will remain closed on 24.09.25 & 25.09.25,” the official notice said.
The Durga Puja holidays in West Bengal, originally scheduled to begin on September 26, will now effectively start from September 24. The early vacation follows the government’s decision to close educational institutions in response to heavy rainfall and flooding across Kolkata and south Bengal. As per the PTI report, schools will remain closed, with teachers and staff advised to work from home.
"Since the Durga Puja holidays are scheduled to start from September 26, effectively the vacation will start from tomorrow (Wednesday). I wish all happy Pujas. My deepest condolences remain with the next of kin of my fellow citizens who lost their lives in this calamity," the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.
