CU’s postponed semester exam will be held on April 25. West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29.
The University of Calcutta has decided to postpone the CU semester exams scheduled in April in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026 in the state. West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
According to the Millennium Post media report, the university sources said the CU’s third-semester exam was originally scheduled for April 23, coinciding with the first phase of polling.
Despite no election being held in Kolkata on April 23, the exam has been rescheduled by the authorities. CU has deferred the April 23 exam to April 25.
WB assembly polling on April 23 will be held in several districts, including those in North Bengal, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Birbhum, Purulia, West Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Bankura.
Calcutta University’s first-semester Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), honours and major exams were scheduled between April 10 and April 24.
Semesters exams on CU campus
Meanwhile, CU’s registrar said the exams must be completed in the interest of students despite the elections. However, if further issues arise, semester exams will be held on the university campus as an alternative, the media report said.
“The deployment of central forces in several colleges ahead of the elections has created logistical challenges in conducting exams,” the report added.
College authorities have written to the CU stating that the exam cannot be held on their premises due to the current situation, causing space constraints. Calcutta University is affiliated with 146 colleges, of which 12 are facing a space crunch due to the presence of central forces.
The university’s third-semester UG exams began on March 24 and will end on April 8.
