NEW DELHI : The pause in the physical classes around the colleges and universities in India coerced by the Covid-19 pandemic finally seems to be ending soon. With the decline in Covid-19 cases around the country, several state governments are gearing up for the preparation of reopening the colleges and other educational institutions. This raises a common question in the minds of students - When will colleges reopen in India?
Telangana became the first state to lift up the Covid-19 lockdown completely and will resume the physical classes in schools and colleges from July 1 onwards. The colleges in Telangana have started special vaccination drives with an aim to vaccinate as many students as they can before reopening the colleges. Himachal Pradesh has reopened all the medical, ayurvedic, nursing, dental and pharmacy colleges around the state.

States like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are planning to reopen the colleges and universities, after vaccinating the students and teachers community. The state of Uttarakhand has reopened the colleges and universities for online classes after the summer vacations, from June 21 onwards.
However, there are still some states like Delhi, Haryana, Meghalaya and Kerala which are hesitant to reopen the colleges and other educational institutions, fearing the possibility of the third wave. The Bihar government is planning to open up all the educational institutions from the month of July in a phased manner.

Gulbarga University to hold UG, PG exams from July 15
The examinations for postgraduate and undergraduate programmes at Gulbarga University will begin from July 15, as per the report by the Times of India . The new academic session will start from November 2021-22.
“It is true that the MCQ model saves a lot of time as the answer-sheets are evaluated by computers. But, that model of examination would adversely impact students’ career. We would not go for it. Whatever the gaps created due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resultant lockdowns in the academic year 2020-21 would be covered in 2021-22 by optimum utilisation of time. We will then be ready for the uniform academic calendar planned by the Department of Higher Education,” said, Vice-Chancellor, Gulbarga University, Dayanand Agsar in the TOI report.

When are colleges reopening in Odisha?
The Odisha government has announced partial lockdown till July 1. The districts are divided into categories based on the number of the new Covid-19 cases. Colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed during this time period.
"All educational institutions and coaching centres will remain closed. There will be no inter-state or intra-state movement of buses," said Odisha chief secretary, Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, in the India Today report.

The Assam government has released new SOPs providing relaxations to the curfew timings, in response to the decline in the Covid-19 cases. The health minister, Keshab Mahanta announced the new SOPs while briefing the media. However, the minister did not announce any relaxations to the colleges and the educational institutions. The teaching classes in government and private colleges in Assam will continue as usual in online mode.

The eligible staff members above 18+ years have to visit the nearest government vaccination centres carrying their ID card and Aadhar card. The online registration can be done on the spot.

The Tamil Nadu government has extended the lockdown till June 28, with some relaxations to many sectors. The government offices are allowed to open with 100% capacity, while private offices can run with 50% staff. However, no relaxations have been provided to educational institutions and colleges during this period. When will colleges reopen in Maharashtra?
The Mumbai University colleges have resumed the online classes in colleges and universities from June 14. The higher and technical education minister, Uday Samant had earlier clarified that the government is not planning to reopen the college and universities in Maharashtra.
The Times of India quoted Samant as saying, "Currently, the condition isn't conducive to start physical attendance. Positive cases are still cropping up and even the threat of Covid-19 third and fourth wave persists."

No decision yet on reopening colleges in Karnataka: Report
The deputy chief minister of Karnataka, C.N Aswathnarayan has clarified that the government has not yet taken any decision on reopening colleges and universities in Karnataka, as per the report by Hindustan Times . The decision will be made after more discussions with the stakeholders.
"At present, schools and colleges are closed. Based on the vaccination drive for people above 18 years, it will be decided on how to go ahead. Experts have suggested reopening the institutions. However, the state government has not decided anything on it, we will look into it after discussion," Ashwathnarayan told ANI.
Ashwathnarayan through a tweet announced that all the students in degree colleges of Karnataka will be vaccinated against Covid-19 in July.

Exams in UP universities to be held by August 15: Dy CM Dinesh Sharma
In a meeting with vice-chancellors of the different state universities held on June 24, the deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Dinesh Sharma has announced that all the pending university exams in Uttar Pradesh will be conducted by August 15. Sharma asked universities to reduce the duration of the examinations to a maximum of 90 minutes. The results of the university examinations will be published by the last week of August.

JNTUH Hyderabad releases exam dates
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad will conduct the JNTUH exams from July 5 to 14 for BTech and pharmacy students. The JNTUH 2021 exams will be held only for fourth and second-year students. The duration of the offline exams will be two hours.
