Delayed fellowship funds for women scientists causing financial stress; AIRSA urges DST to resolve issue

NEW DELHI: The All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) has raised an urgent concern regarding the ongoing delays in the disbursement of fellowship funds under the Department of Science and Technology’s (DST) Women Scientist Scheme (WOS). This initiative, aimed at supporting women researchers, has been facing significant delays, which are creating serious financial difficulties for its beneficiaries, the scholars’ group highlighted.

In a letter addressed to professor Abhay Karandikar, secretary of the DST, AIRSA highlighted several critical issues. One of the primary concerns is the unpredictable payment schedule. Many researchers have reported that fellowship payments have been delayed for weeks or even months, causing considerable financial stress. For many recipients, these funds are essential for covering living expenses and research-related costs, and the delays have left them struggling to manage.

The delays are not only impacting the financial well-being of the researchers but also their research progress. The uncertainty surrounding the availability of funds is affecting the procurement of essential materials, delaying ongoing projects, and negatively impacting the overall quality of research output. The AIRSA emphasized that such disruptions are detrimental to the scientific community and the timely completion of important research work.

Furthermore, the financial strain has led to emotional and mental stress, especially among women scientists who often juggle caregiving responsibilities alongside their academic and research work. The uncertainty of not knowing when funds will arrive has added a psychological burden, hindering their ability to focus on their research and productivity.

DST fellowships

In response to these ongoing challenges, AIRSA has made several requests to the DST. They have urged the implementation of a fixed schedule for the timely release of fellowship funds, suggesting monthly or quarterly disbursements to provide stability. Additionally, AIRSA called for the immediate release of all pending payments to relieve the financial burden on affected researchers. The association has also requested the creation of an online tracking system that would allow researchers to monitor the status of their fellowship payments in real-time, bringing more transparency to the process.

The All India Research Scholars Association believes that addressing these concerns will not only improve the well-being of women scientists but also enhance the overall productivity and success of research under the DST’s initiatives. The association hopes that these requests will be given immediate attention to ensure the smooth and timely disbursement of fellowship funds in the future.
