Delhi Medical Council received 1,000 applications and there are only 60 seats available in the current scenario for being allotted for internship training.
NEW DELHI: Delhi Medical Council has requested the National Medical Commission (NMC) to grant permission again to allow foreign medical graduates to undergo Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) in non-teaching hospitals. The council is apprehensive about providing internships even for FMGE candidates belonging to Delhi domicile.

In a letter to Aruna V Vaniker, president Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), Girish Tyagi, secretary of DMC wrote: “To accommodate the large number of the applicants for the purpose of undergoing internship, it is requested that they may be allowed to undergo internship training in Non-Teaching institute as it was done in last year, so that these students interest is not jeopardized.”
As per the NMC guidelines, it is mandatory for foreign medical graduates to complete an internship in India for a minimum duration of 12 months in medical colleges approved by the CRMI. The state medical councils will be responsible to allocate medical colleges to these FMGs for completing internship. The regulation states that the internship should be completed within two years of passing the FMGE exam.
The FMGE results were declared in February by the National Board of Examinations at natboard.edu.in.
The Delhi Medical Council informed NMC that 230 aspirants belonging to Delhi having the passport and Aadhaar card of Delhi applied to start the internship in various medical colleges in Delhi.

“It is stated that more than 1,000 students are desirous of starting internship in Delhi but we called the applications only from Delhi Domicile individuals. Further, as per the information received from various medical colleges/institutions in Delhi, there are only 60 seats available in the current scenario for being allotted for internship training,” the letter read.
“By seeing the number of seats and number of applications received we will not be able to provide an internship even to FMGE belonging to Delhi,” it added.
