DU reaches first position in QS World University Rankings for sustainability: Vice Chancellor

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi (DU) has seen improvement in its QS World University Rankings for sustainability, jumping from the fourth position in India last year to the first position in 2024. On the international level, DU's ranking went from 381-400 in 2023 to 220 in 2024.

This information was given by the vice-chancellor of Delhi University, Yogesh Singh, during a press meeting at DU. While giving detailed information on DU's Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking, the dean Mukesh Mahlawat said that in the QS World University Rankings 2023, DU's global rank was 521-530, which has increased to 407 in 2024. Additionally, DU has secured the top spot in the central university category across India.

Background wave

The University of Delhi has improved in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings as well. In 2022, DU held the 23 position overall, which improved to 22 in 2023. Within the university category, it climbed from 13th place in 2022 to 11th position in 2023. The Vice-Chancellor said that soon we will be in the top 10 in NIRF.

Subject-wise ranking

In subject-wise ranking, according to broad subject categories, DU's ranking is 210 in arts and humanities, 401-450 in engineering and technology, 379 in life sciences and medicine, 345 in natural sciences, and 178 in social sciences and management. In individual subject-wise rankings, DU's development studies are ranked 43, anthropology 51-100, English 101-150, languages 101-150, and sociology 101-150.

Mahlawat further stated that in nine subjects, DU has secured a higher rank compared to last year. In 11 subjects, the rank remains unchanged from last year, while in four subjects, DU has obtained a rank for the first time.

DU’s update on admissions

While giving information regarding admissions, the vice chancellor said that registration for postgraduate (PG) admission at DU will start on April 25. Students will be able to register for admission till May 25. After this, the second phase of admission will start. The vice chancellor said that after the completion of the CUET (UG) process, UG admissions will be declared by the middle of May.

Giving detailed information on admissions for 2024-25, the dean of admissions, Haneet Gandhi, said that this year admissions will be done on a total of 13,500 seats for postgraduate (including NCWEB), 120 seats each for three Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and 60 seats each for Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws (BA LLB) and Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Laws (BBA LLB) courses. He said that this time MA Hindu studies, MA public health, MA Chinese studies, MA Korean studies and Master in fine arts have also been included in PG admissions.

DU alumni shine in UPSC results

Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh expressed delight at the accomplishments of former DU students in the latest UPSC results. He highlighted that this year, a total of two female candidates are in the top 5 and both of them have been students of DU, from Miranda House and St. Stephen's College.

Additionally, the sixth position was also secured by a DU student. Singh noted that Miranda House has seen success with a total of five female students passing UPSC, with four of them ranking within the top 50 candidates.

Furthermore, five students from Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College have qualified for UPSC, with one achieving the ninth rank. Additionally, a student from Rajdhani College secured the 136th rank.
