Download NowNEW DELHI: Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan led a ‘Swacchta Hi Seva’ shramdaan initiative at Delhi University (DU) today. Students and teachers of Delhi University as well as citizens joined the education minister in the cleanliness drive to pay ‘Swacchanjali’ to Mahatma Gandhi.

The ‘Ek Tareekh, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ was organised throughout India as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign, marking the ninth anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission. According to the ministry, the campaign was scheduled at 10 am for one hour today.

Pradhan expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his resolve to develop a ‘Swachha Bharat’, which is free of garbage and said, “ The initiative has transformed into the world’s biggest people-led movement. With the Prime Minister’s inspiration, swachhata has become our Swabhav.”
Pradhan further added, “ This jan-andolan is just a beginning and with this, we renew our commitment to make our academic institutions garbage-free."

The education minister highlighted that this cleanliness initiative will be a true ‘Swacchanjali’ to Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and all our freedom fighters. The minister further mentioned that with collective effort, the Indian villages, cities and all public places can be made waste-free and clean.

As per the government of India's swachh bharat mission, " Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign is being celebrated from September 15 to October 2 this year under the joint aegis of DDWS and MoHUA for undertaking shramdaan activities aiming to generate jan andolan through community participation; to provide impetus on implementation of SBM; to disseminate the importance of a sampoorna swachh village; to reinforce the concept of Sanitation as everyone’s business; and as a prelude for the Swachh Bharat Diwas (2nd October) with nationwide participation."
The theme of SHS 2023 is 'Garbage Free India' with focus on visual cleanliness and welfare of 'SafaiMitras'.
