According to the official PIB press release, NMMSS has been onboarded on the NSP since 2018-19, and the students are shortlisted based on the Class 8 exam. Students can get themselves registered on NSP in Class 9 using their Aadhaar card or their parents. After registration, students get their OTR done on NSP, after which they can apply for scholarships. One-time registration (OTR) was introduced in 2024-25 to avoid any duplication.
NMMSS is open only for students studying in government and government-aided schools and excluding KVS, NVS, and other government residential schools. The scholarship amount of Rs 12,000 per annum is disbursed as a direct benefit transfer (DBT) using Aadhaar payment bridge either into the bank account of the students or their parents.
