NEW DELHI: Children’s Day is celebrated in India on November 14, the birthday of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to draw attention to the welfare and well-being of children.
India has the largest adolescent population in the world, according to the United Nations, with 253 million under the age of 18 and is estimated to have 19% of the world’s child population.
But on many counts, India is failing her children. The Global Hunger Index 2024 has ranked India 105 out of 127 in four components, three of which look at child nutrition and child mortality.
As per the Index, India is actually the worst performer in the world when it comes to child stunting, which looks at the share of children under age five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition.
According to the central government’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS), 1050 children below the minimum age for legal marriage were married off in 2021. Moreover, around 12.6% of all school children in Classes 9 and 10 drop out of school every year.
While the realities many children live with are sobering, November 14 is for celebrating children and is observed in schools across the country.
On the occasion of Children’s Day, take Careers360’s Children’s Day 2024 quiz where we look at some of the important dates, charters, and legislations around child welfare in India and the world.
