IGNOU launches BA home science under FYUP scheme, apply on Samarth portal

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in home science under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) scheme. This is launched in accordance with the credit framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the programme structure, students who complete one year will receive an undergraduate certificate in home science; those who complete two years, undergraduate diploma in home science; after completion of three years, BA in home science; and after four years, students will receive a BA (honours) degree in home science.

Interested candidates can apply on the IGNOU Samarth portal at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.

Eligible candidates must have passed Class 12. Admissions are open for the July 2025 admission cycle. The distance education programme can be completed flexibly from three to six years. There will be a total of 120 credits awarded for the course and examinations will be conducted at the the end of the term annually.

IGNOU’s fee structure for the BA in home science programme will be Rs 5,000 per year, which is inclusive of registration fee and development charges, as applicable, an official press release has stated.

IGNOU BA Home Science: Syllabus

The BA in home science programme will be a multidisciplinary course involving areas such as human development and family studies, community resource management, food and nutrition, extension and communication, and fabric and apparel sciences.

The prospective career options after the course are extensive. Some of them are highlighted in the official statement: Teacher, lecturer, event manager, Anganwadi supervisor, personnel and family nutrition educator, non-governmental organisation (NGO) community worker, quality control personnel in food and textile sectors, etc.
