IIM Guwahati launches first MBA programme with 52 students from 18 states

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati has commenced classes for its first-ever Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme at its transit campus in Tech City, Bongora, in Assam's Kamrup district.

The inaugural MBA batch comprises 52 students from 18 states, marking the beginning of the institute's flagship management programme.

The institute has begun academic activities under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad, which is guiding the newly established IIM. For now, classes will be held at the transit campus, while the permanent campus is being developed across 574 bighas in Morabhita and Dighalkuchi villages in Kamrup district. The permanent campus is expected to be completed within the next three years.

CM calls for 50% seats for Assam students

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the inaugural session, said the launch of the MBA programme marks a significant milestone for higher education in the Northeast. He also pointed out that IIM Guwahati has become the 22nd Indian Institute of Management and the second IIM in the Northeast, reflecting the Centre's focus on expanding institutions of national importance in the region.

Sarma also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for strengthening management education in the country. He said the number of IIMs has increased from 13 in 2014 to 22, making quality management education more accessible. He also highlighted that the state government developed the transit campus to ensure academic activities could begin without waiting for the permanent campus

The Chief Minister recalled that Prime Minister Modi had launched IIM Guwahati's academic journey on February 14, 2026, by inaugurating its executive education programmes. Within five months, the institute has introduced its flagship MBA programme.

Digital Design and 3D Printing centre

Earlier in the day, Sarma inaugurated the Digital Design and 3D Printing Centre of Excellence at Tech City, Bongora. Developed under the PM-DeVINE scheme at a cost of Rs 53.84 crore, the facility has been implemented by AMTRON in partnership with the North Eastern Council. It will serve as a regional common resource centre with one hub in Guwahati and 10 spokes across the Northeast.

He also laid the foundation stone for the integrated office building of the Co-District Commissioner at Palashbari.
