IIT Bombay second-year student found dead in hostel room; probe underway

An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay student was found dead in his hostel room. The second-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) student was found hanging in IIT Bombay's hostel number 4. Several students took to Reddit, alleging that the death was a case of suicide. However, the institute has not officially confirmed the cause of death as the investigation is underway.

In an email to the institute community, the IIT Bombay Director expressed grief over the death of second-year student Sohil, who was staying in Hostel 4. The email reads, "I am really disturbed that in spite of strengthening the wellness support system, being pro-active in supporting students through multiple workshops, interactions with alumni and faculty, this unfortunate incident has happened. We all, including wardens, faculty advisors, course instructors as well as hall managers and staff have been taking efforts to reach out to students by being sensitive and alert. But it is clear that we need to do much more."

Reacting to the incident on Reddit, one user wrote, "It’s heartbreaking that incidents like this seem to happen so often. What is happening, brother, in IITs?"

Peaceful protest

A Reddit user, claiming to be IIT Bombay student has called for a peaceful protest, alleging that the institute has failed to bring about meaningful reforms despite repeated tragedies.

In a post shared online, the user said each incident is followed by a condolence email from the administration but questioned what concrete measures have been taken to improve campus safety and mental health support.

The student alleged that the institute often prioritises protecting its image over addressing issues related to mental health, harassment and student welfare. The post also claimed that campus bodies, including the Students' Wellness Centre (SWC) and Gender Cell, lack transparency and accountability, alleging that complaints are often kept internal instead of being addressed effectively.

Calling for collective action, the student urged peers to organise, discuss their demands and stage a peaceful protest rather than allowing public attention to fade after a few days. The post further criticised the institute's leadership and called for changes in the administration.
