NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, (IIT Delhi) has implemented various measures to support students with disabilities. Recently, a portable, accessible restroom has been set up at the main administrative building in the academic area to cater to individuals with mobility challenges. Additionally, accessible washrooms have been installed in other academic blocks across the campus.
IIT Delhi has made progress in fostering the inclusion of students with disabilities within its campus. Led by the office of accessible education under the diversity and inclusion office, various programs have been introduced. These initiatives focus on academic support, transportation accessibility, infrastructure enhancements, and the engagement of students with disabilities in extracurricular pursuits.
IIT Delhi has also provided an accessible e-cart to facilitate the transportation of students with disabilities across the campus. Enhancing campus accessibility for students with disabilities has been a primary focus, achieved through the installation of ramps in classrooms, braille signage in lifts, braille name plates, and accessible hostel accommodations.
Furthermore, the campus has been equipped with ramps to improve accessibility in common areas for students with disabilities. Additionally, height-adjustable tables have been installed, and elevated wheelchairs have been acquired to enhance accessibility in laboratories and experiments. The Institute takes pride in having perhaps the first accessible chemistry lab in the country, highlighting its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Students with disabilities are provided with scribes and compensatory time, as mandated by law. Moreover, various assistive devices such as low-vision magnifiers, hearing aids, KIBO reading and writing devices, braille embossers, laptops, accessible keyboard trays, and electric or elevated wheelchairs are provided to students based on their individual needs, emphasizing the Institute's dedication to catering to diverse student requirements.
SANGAM, an intercollege sports event tailored for students with disabilities, was introduced to boost their involvement in extracurricular activities and kickstart inclusivity in sports at IIT Delhi. The event, spanning a full day, featured activities like blind cricket, chess, and athletics. Teams from different institutions, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Kirori Mal College (Delhi University), and Ashoka University, actively participated in this sports event.
