IIT Indore partners with Mehta Family Foundation to establish 2 new academic schools on campus

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore has partnered with the Mehta Family Foundation to launch two new schools of education - the Mehta Family School of Sustainability and the Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering. These mark the seventh and eighth schools established by the foundation, spanning an area of 2 lakh square feet.

The school of sustainability at IIT Indore will offer the first-ever Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme in Environmental Economics and Sustainable Engineering. The Mehta Family School of Sustainability will also establish three centres of excellence: For energy systems and battery technology, for environmental economics and environmental law, and for water and climate studies.

The school, established in collaboration with the Mehta Family Foundation (MFF), aims to have more than 1,500 graduates in 10 years through Executive Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes.

IIT Indore Education: Biomedical sciences

The IIT Indore School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering will have programmes focusing on AI in healthcare and bioinformatics, drug discovery, molecular biology, biomanufacturing, and wearable health technology. The aim is to develop “data-driven solutions” for endemics of chikungunya and dengue, while addressing the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The Mehta Family schools intend to create professionals across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical devices sectors, along with policy and research.

Speaking about IIT Indore, Rahul Mehta, founder of the MFF, said, “India’s future hinges on nurturing institutions that can create intellectual talent to address challenges such as climate resilience and innovative healthcare. IIT Indore, located at the heart of India, has all the right ingredients to nurture the next generation of talent capable of addressing both the nation’s immediate challenges and future aspirations.”

IIT Indore-MFF agreement

The agreement for the new schools at IIT Indore took place in New Delhi in the presence of Abhay Karandikar, secretary, department of science and technology, Rajesh S Gokhale, secretary, department of biotechnology, Suhas Joshi, director, IIT Indore, and Mehta, MFF.

Other dignitaries present at the IIT Indore-MFF partnership included Gobardhan Das, director, IISER Bhopal, Devendra Jalihal, director, IIT Guwahati, Ananth Y Grama, Purdue University, and Shankar Subramaniam and Rajesh Gupta from the University of California, San Diego.
