IIT Madras awards 3,661 degrees including joint, dual, and PhD. The institute incubated 100 startups, filed 400 patents in 2024-25.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras held the convocation ceremony for 2024-25 on July 11. This was the 62nd convocation of the institute, which saw 3,227 students being conferred 3,661 degrees, including joint and dual degrees. The Department Degree Distribution Programmes (D3P) were held for each department following the main ceremony in the morning.
IIT Madras director, V Kamakoti, awarded degrees for various disciplines:

The PhD degrees also included 10 joint degrees, in collaboration with foreign universities from countries like Australia, Singapore, France and Germany.

According to an official statement, IIT Madras has incubated more than 100 deep-tech startups in 2024-25, and witnessed the first IIT Madras-incubated startup, Ather, going public. The institute has exceeded its vision of ‘One Patent a Day’ set by Kamakoti, by filing more than 400 patents in a year. It also commenced the first batch of ‘Fine Arts and Culture Excellence’ (FACE) category.

Via research grants, IIT Madras has supported several research initiatives like artificial intelligence (AI) and data sciences, safety science and systems, and sensing and vision.
A new centre for Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) Corridor was also inaugurated at IIT Madras. It aims to promote research in Indian mathematics, astronomy, linguistics, philosophy, architecture, and traditional metallurgy. The inauguration ceremony was presided by Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor, Kamakoti, Padma Subrahmanyam, Padma Vibhushan (2024) Awardee, Rajesh Kumar, head, department of humanities and social sciences, and IKS coordinator Deepak Paramashivan.
“IIT Madras has proved herself by sustaining the top ranks in the NIRF Ranking – She has retained the first position for the sixth year in a row for overall performance among all universities in India, first position among engineering institutes for the ninth year since inception of NIRF, and ranked second in the research institutions and innovation categories,” said Kamakoti in his address.
