NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), concluded its first pan IIT student governance summit hosted on October 26 and 27, 2024. The two-day summit was held at the IIT Madras campus. The new initiative is a platform for students to address the ongoing changes in higher education and the challenges faced by them.
Through this collaboration, the summit aims to strengthen the impact of student governance across IITs, the IIT Madras statement said.
“The summit aimed to equip student representatives from IITs with essential knowledge, competencies, and resources to catalyze significant transformations within their institutions and across the wider IIT community,” the IIT Madras statement said
The summit was held to foster open and productive discussions among student leaders and facilitate the exchange of ideas, best practices, and innovative solutions.
The two-day summit included lectures by experts on various topics such as – ‘Sustainable Campus Policies and Student Practices,’ ‘Academic Standards and Policies,’ and ‘Research Affairs and Ecosystem Policies’ besides ‘Student Mental Health and Holistic Wellbeing.’
Some other topics discussed during this pioneering summit include ‘UG Placement and Internship Management Policies,’ ‘Research Infrastructure and Career Development,’ and ‘Deliberation on Cultural and Tech Fest Strategies.’

Atharv Joshi, student convenor, of PAN-IIT Student Governance Summit said: “As the Convenor of this prestigious event, I am excited to see the vibrant student leadership from across all IITs come together for a transformative experience. This summit was a unique platform designed to foster collaboration, exchange ideas, and shape the future of student governance across our institutions.”
V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras said: “Governance and Effective Management are integral parts of any organization. This Summit has not only enabled close association among student legislators but also has brought in lot of synergy in effectively addressing important issues in the IIT campuses. The outcome and suggestions emanated out of this Summit will be taken up very seriously by the administration.”
