Iran unrest: Indian Youth Congress urges PM Modi, MEA to ensure safety of medical students

Amid the growing uncertainty and political tension in Iran, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar urging them to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of Indian medical students studying in the country.

In a separate letter addressed to both PM Modi and Jaishankar, Uday Bhanu Chib, national president of the IYC has flagged the rising anxiety among Indian students studying in Iran and their families, who have not been able to have clear communication.

Thousands of Indian students are enrolled in medical colleges across Iran. Chib called on the government to closely monitor the situation, strengthen coordination with the Indian Embassy, and issue timely advisories.

He also urged the Indian government to keep emergency, contingency, and evacuation plans ready.

“The lack of clear communication and visible preparedness has added to the concerns of students and their families back home…The safety of Indian students abroad must remain a priority. We seek your immediate intervention to ensure their protection and reassurance,” the letter read.

Protests were reported across Iran from Friday and shopkeepers in the capital, Tehran, went on a strike on Sunday over economic stagnation. At least nine people have lost their lives and 44 reportedly injured in the unrest.

Reacting to the incident, US President Donald Trump said that the United States will intervene if the Iranian government uses force against peaceful demonstrators. In June, the US bombed three Iranian nuclear sites during a 12-day escalation between Israel and Iran, which Trump described as a “very successful attack", as per reports.
