The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 exam dates. NTA will conduct the JEE Mains 2025 session 1 between January 21 and 30, and session 2 from April 1 to 10. The testing agency will begin the NTA JEE Mains 2026 registration on the official website, jeemain.nta.nic.in, in October.
Recently, NTA clarified that there’s no such advisory related to any exam city allocation, and candidates will still have the option to select their preferred exam city. NTA had also issued advisory for candidates to update their Aadhar, UDID card, and category certificate in advance to avoid any discrepancies in the online application form.
The testing agency had previously said that the JEE Mains 2026 session 1 registration will commence in October; however, the registration window is yet to open. The JEE Main 2026 session 1 exam will be held in January and session 2 in April.
The JEE Mains 2026 exam is held twice a year to admit students for engineering, pharmacy, and planning programmes at various colleges across the country.
The JEE Main 2026 examination for BE and BTech courses paper 1 will include three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Paper 2 is intended for candidates applying to BArch and BPlanning programmes. It comprises Mathematics, an Aptitude Test, and a third section that differs based on the selected course – Paper 2A for BArch and Paper 2B for BPlanning.
JEE Mains 2026 is held for admissions to engineering and architecture programmes in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other engineering institutes. Those who qualify for the JEE Mains can appear for the JEE Advanced 2026 for IIT admissions.

Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025 or are appearing in 2026 can apply for JEE Main 2026. Physics and Mathematics are mandatory, and candidates should have also studied Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, or a Technical/Vocational subject. There is no minimum mark requirement or age limit for eligibility.

The NTA will conduct the JEE Main 2025 Session 1 exam from January 21 to 30, 2025. The exam will be held in computer-based mode across multiple cities in India and abroad. The detailed schedule, including shift timings and city intimation slips, will be released closer to the exam date on the official website, jeemain.nta.nic.in.

This year saw the lowest number of qualifiers for JEE Advanced 2025 compared to the last six years. Of the top 2.5 lakh candidates who became eligible for JEE Adv, only 54,378 qualified. Of which, only 33% secured a seat in IITs. This means that 18,188 seats in IITs were allotted through JoSAA counselling.

JEE Main 2026 paper 1 BE, BTech exams will be conducted as a computer-based test (CBT) mode. The question paper will be held in 13 languages - Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
This year, the session 1 exam was conducted in 10 shifts and session 2 was held in nine shifts.

Last year, a total of 4,540 PwD candidates registered for the exam, of which 4,314 appeared. The NTA had also allotted PwD/ PwBD-friendly test centre and provided extra organizational support to those candidates.

The NTA is working towards increasing the number of exam cities for wide reach and ease of engineering aspirants. Last year, JEE Mains exam was held in 284 cities in India and 15 cities abroad. The total count for this year is yet to be announced. "Furthermore, special attention is being given to address the requirements and needs of PwD/PwBD candidates appearing in the Examination," it said.

One of the major concerns raised by engineering aspirants last year was the recurring and increasing error rate in the JEE Mains exam. The issue was brought up after the students and coaching centre flagged nine errors, of which NTA dropped just one question. In total, two questions were dropped in 2025.
A year before that, the NTA had dropped a total of 12 question from 90-question per section paper.

The JEE Mains 2026 syllabus covers topics from both Class 11 and 12. The question paper will assess students' knowledge in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Those opting for BArch paper will have to qualify a drawing test and BPlanning aspirants will have to solve planning based questions.

The NTA, in its first advisory, asked engineering aspirants to update their personal details on Aadhaar card. However, today it clarified that an option to overcome the mismatch in the Aadhaar card and Class 10 certificate will be made available during the application process. It also asked candidates to fill their parents' names separately in the JEE Main registration form.

For the JEE Main 2026 exam, male candidates in the general category must pay a registration fee of Rs 1,000, while female candidates pay Rs 800. In the Gen‑EWS category, males pay Rs 900 and females Rs800. Candidates from the SC, ST and PwD categories are required to pay Rs 500 as application fee.
