Dear Reader,

Background wave

Just before the pandemic, we launched The Workplace, a platform for young people just starting off their careers to share their experiences, dilemmas, setbacks, and anxieties – and the response has been overwhelming.

Young professionals have shared their experiences of finding internship opportunities that became full-time jobs, moving to a metropolitan city for the first time for work, and feeling underpaid and overworked in their jobs; interns with All Indian Council for Technical Education relayed their experience of learning through AICTE internships; finally, experts have written about what makes their own fields of work exciting and explained why training certain disciplines is in high demand.

The Workplace also includes detailed and insightful reportage on the lives and struggles of those just starting out. Beyond detailed placement analyses, our reports look at how students struggle to find work, mental health issues, the opening of new employment avenues and new types of jobs, online skilling and recruitment scams and the daunting negotiation of gender roles at the workplace. In a post-pandemic world where a ‘work-from-home’ setup is the new order, we have also shed light on how the newly-employed are coping with it and how technology is playing a key role in shaping their future endeavours.

We invite readers to write to tell us about their own experiences at the email address given below. We will publish a selection of these notes on the website. We promise to use what you share with us responsibly – we will leave names out, if you so wish, and change all identifying details. For details on word-count, publication policy and more, please refer to our submission guidelines, also linked below.
