Over 7 lakh Kendriya Vidyalaya students assessed via education ministry’s TARA app, 1.46 lakh on career tool

Over 7 lakh students across 1,289 Kendriya Vidyalayas have been assessed for foundational reading skills using the education ministry’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Teachers' Assistant for Reading Assessment (TARA) app, while a newly launched career guidance tool – My Career Advisor – has registered a total of 1,46,061 students since July last year, the government informed parliament on Monday.

Kendriya Vidyalayas were among the first where the TARA app was implemented. A total of 7,04,210 KV students from Classes 3 to 8 have been assessed through the app, the education ministry said..

TARA is an AI driven tool to develop and deploy reliable and scalable digital solutions for the assessment of Oral Reading Fluency (ORF), a critical component of foundational literacy.

TARA App: NCERT, IIT Bombay pact

In a question raised by BJP MP from Odisha, Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo, minister of state for education Jayant Chaudhary said, “TARA app uses audio signal analyses to measure attributes linked to word decoding accuracy, pace and expression in oral reading. Kendriya Vidaylaya Sangathan (KVS) has implemented the TARA App during the Financial Year 2025-26,”

It assesses students in Hindi and English. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay for TARA.

“In the financial year 2025-26, KVS has made a provision of Rs 2,44,7048 plus 18% GST for conducting and analysing the Oral Reading Assessment (ORF) through TARA app,” added Chaudhary.

My Career Advisor App: 1.46 lakh registered

My Career Advisor app was developed in collaboration with Pandit Sunder Lal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), Bhopal, NCERT and Wadhwani Foundation. The app was launched on July 29, 2025, to help students make informed career decisions.

Out of a total 1.46 lakh registered, passion tagging has also been completed for 97,644 students, the education ministry said. Passion tagging is a feature that aligns students interests with the over 1,500 jobs roles available on the app.

Among the states and UTs, it is Punjab and Chandigarh which have the maximum number of children enrolled.

In the northeastern states and the UTs of Ladakh and Lakshwadeep the adoption of this technology has been negligible.

Chaudhary informed that to popularise and ensure adoption of the app, a national-level workshop was organised by PSSCIVE and even state-level training sessions were carried out in nine states/UTs – Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Telangana, Gujarat, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
