Maharashtra Board Exam 2026: How SSC, HSC marks are calculated, graded

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) will conduct the Maharashtra Class 12 board exams 2026 from tomorrow, February 10, with around 15 lakh students appearing across the state. Students are required to carry their Maharashtra HSC hall ticket downloaded from the official website, mahahsscboard.in.

According to Maharashtra SSC, HSC time table 2026, Class 10 board exams will be conducted from February 20 to March 18, and Class 12 from February 10 to March 11. The Maha HSC annual exams will be held in two shifts - first sitting will take place from 11 am to 2 pm and second sitting from 3 pm to 6 pm.

For the High Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams, candidates will be allowed to write the papers in English, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Urdu, Sindhi (Arabic or Devanagari script), or Hindi, as per board rules. Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Pali, and Ardhamagadhi papers have to be written in Devanagari script.

Maharashtra Board Exam 2026: Passing criteria

To pass a subject in the Maharashtra HSC exam, a student must score at least 35% of the maximum marks prescribed for that subject. For subjects having two papers or a theory and a practical, marks obtained in each test will be added together to calculate pass marks, or distinction.

If a student fails in one or more subjects, a shortfall of up to 15 marks in aggregate, subject to a maximum of 15 marks overall and not exceeding the subject-wise limit, may be condoned. This concession is restricted to a maximum of three subjects.

Candidates appearing with exemptions will be eligible for automatic condonation of up to eight marks, proportionate to the number of failed subjects, but not exceeding three marks in any single subject, the board said.

Maharashtra HSC 2026: Grading system

The Maharashtra Board will award the “first class with distinction” to students who have scored 75% and above marks in the final exam. Students obtaining marks between 75-60% will be placed in the first class, and those with 60-45% marks will be in second class.

The board has clarified that no distinction, first class, or second class will be awarded to students who appeared with exemptions. Additionally, those falling short of the first-class aggregate by up to three marks will be granted grace marks for grade calculation.
