On July 24, the Maharashtra government introduced a 10 per cent reservation for the EWS candidates in MBBS and allied medical programmes in private and unaided medical colleges through the NEET UG counselling 2025.
The government’s decision to introduce 10% reservation for the EWS category candidates in the NEET UG counselling 2025 had invited a wave of criticism from the open category applicants, parents, and medical community.
Moreover, many have also been demanding an increase in seat intake or withdrawal of the government’s EWS quota move.
Several students also approached the Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and general administrative department requesting them to arrange a meeting to submit their grievances.
The students told the ministers that the government’s decision of 10% EWS quota came after the admission process began, which violates the Supreme Court directives and reservation policy.
The state Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has started the Maharashtra NEET UG Counselling 2025 process for admission to medical courses in government and private medical and dental colleges on the basis of the NEET UG 2025 scores.
As per the government’s official statement, the centralised admission process for admission to UG health science course has begun from July 23, 2025.
“Candidates belonging to Constitutional Reservation categories who have erroneously selected the incorrect category (for e.g. OBC instead of VJ/NT/SBC) in their application form are hereby informed to raise a ticket from the help module for category correction and submit relevant supporting documents,” the official statement reads.
However, change from open category to any reservation category (including specified reservation) will not be considered, it added.
