In view of the ongoing heavy rainfall in Thane district and safety concerns for students, the Education Department of Thane District Council has declared a holiday for all schools on August 20, 2025. The closure applies to all students from Class 1 to 12 across all boards.

Schools have been instructed to immediately inform students and parents about the closure. The decision follows a red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre, Colaba, Mumbai, and instructions from the District Collector, Thane.

“With a view to ensuring the safety of students, all schools in the district are hereby declared closed on August 20, 2025. Schools are requested to immediately inform all students and parents about this holiday,” the official notice said.

Panvel, Navi Mumbai schools shut tomorrow

Panvel Municipal Corporation has also announced a holiday for all government and private schools, ashram schools, colleges, and vocational/training institutions in its jurisdiction on August 20. The directive cites the IMD’s red alert for Raigad district and ongoing heavy rainfall in the region.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has also declared a holiday on August 20 for all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools—government, private aided, and unaided—along with teachers and non-teaching staff, in light of heavy rainfall and safety concerns.

Education Officer (Secondary) Devidas Mahajan stated that measures have been taken to ensure the safety of students, given the current weather situation and the possibility of travel disruption due to heavy rains.

MU exams postponed amid heavy rain

On August 18, the University of Mumbai (MU) announced the postponement of all exams scheduled for the day due to heavy rainfall across the city. As per the official circular, these exams will now be conducted on August 23, with the original timings remaining unchanged.

The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby coastal districts, including Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, warning of heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Several low-lying areas in the city, such as Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex, experienced waterlogging, disrupting traffic and causing delays in local train services.
