‘CUET helped streamline admissions, but result delays and UGC NET exam cancellation posed challenges’: MGCU VC

NEW DELHI: Incepted in February 2016, Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), Motihari, is among a new set of central universities in Bihar which held its first convocation in October last year. The university offers four undergraduate and 21 postgraduate (PG) programmes across 21 departments. Its vice-chancellor, Sanjay Srivastava, spoke to Careers360 about the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), problems and opportunities in running a new central university, and plans for a new medical college and new courses. Edited excerpts.

Q. How has MGCU’s journey been so far?

A. Since its inception in 2016, MGCU has made significant strides in providing quality education and fostering a vibrant academic culture. The journey has been both challenging and rewarding. Initially, we faced hurdles such as infrastructure development, recruitment of faculty, and setting up administrative systems. However, through persistent efforts and support of the government, we have established a robust academic and research environment.

Our focus has been on creating a dynamic curriculum, enhancing research capabilities, and fostering an inclusive and diverse academic community. Our goal is to offer flexible and comprehensive educational pathways that align with global standards.

Q. What challenges did you face as a young central university?

A. As a young university, we face several challenges, including infrastructure development, recruitment and retention of qualified faculty, and securing adequate funding for research and development.

Additionally, we are working to establish our reputation and build strong industry and academic partnerships. Despite these challenges, we are committed to overcoming them through strategic planning, innovation, and collaboration.

Q. What has been your experience of admitting students through CUET UG and PG?

A. Admitting students through the CUET has streamlined the admission process and ensured a fair and transparent selection system. The centralised examination system has broadened our reach, attracting students from various regions and backgrounds, enhancing the diversity of our student body.

Although the initial implementation of CUET posed logistical challenges, we have successfully adapted to the system. It has provided a standardised platform for assessing student capabilities, ensuring that we admit students who meet our academic standards and are well prepared for rigorous academic pursuits.

Q. Have delays in CUET results and cancellation of the UGC NET impacted the academic schedule of university?

A. The delays in the announcement of CUET UG results and the cancellation of the NET exam have indeed posed challenges to our academic calendar. We are actively working on contingency plans to minimise the impact on our academic sessions. Adjustments will be made to the academic calendar to ensure that students do not face significant disruptions in their studies.

We are also exploring options such as condensed semesters, extended class hours, and supplementary classes to cover the syllabus effectively. Our priority is to ensure that the academic progress of our students remains uninterrupted and that they receive the quality education they deserve.

Q. How do you maintain regional, gender, and caste diversity at MGCU?

A. MGCU is committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive campus environment. Our admission policies are designed to provide equal opportunities to students from all backgrounds. While a significant number of our students are from Bihar, we also have a substantial percentage of students from other states like Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, etc.

Q. What challenges are you facing in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020?

A. We have embraced the NEP 2020 and are implementing its various provisions with enthusiasm. The Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), multiple entry-exit options, and the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) are being integrated into our academic framework.

While we are excited about these progressive changes, we do face some infrastructure challenges. These include the need for additional classroom space, technological upgrades, and enhanced faculty training.

Q. Has MGCU taken any Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) loans?

A. No, we have not availed loans from the HEFA to support infrastructure development and enhance our academic facilities. Being a new university, we expect a composite grant from the government for building our permanent campus. The request for grants is in the pipeline

Q. How is the permanent campus coming along? Until December, several offices and hostels were running from rented premises.

A. We have made significant progress in establishing the permanent campus of MGCU in Motihari Town. We have been allocated additional lands by the Bihar cabinet and are expanding MGCU's campus by an additional 127.26 acres, significantly augmenting our total landholding from the previous 134 acres to 261.26 acres. We will have administrative offices, campuses and hostels in our permanent campus.

MGCU and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to begin construction.

We are now focusing on developing state-of-the-art academic and residential facilities. The new campus will feature modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, a central library, sports complexes, and student housing. We are working diligently to ensure that the campus meets the highest standards of infrastructure and sustainability.

Q. What is the progress on the satellite campuses at Bettiah and Sheohar?

A. The establishment of the satellite campuses is progressing as planned. We have completed the feasibility studies and identified suitable locations for these campuses. Initially, it will be in some government building and gradually, we will identify the location for permanent campuses.

Q. You were also planning a medical college.

A. The plan to open a medical college on the university campus is part of our long-term strategic vision to enhance healthcare education and services in the region. We are in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals from regulatory bodies and have started preliminary planning for the infrastructure and faculty recruitment.

The medical college will offer undergraduate and postgraduate medical programmes, equipped with modern facilities, advanced laboratories, and a teaching hospital. This initiative will not only provide quality medical education but also improve healthcare for the region.

Q. Are there any plans to launch new courses?

A. Yes, we have plans to launch several new courses in the upcoming academic year to cater to emerging fields and the evolving interests of students. These include programmes in data science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), environmental studies, and public policy. We are also introducing new specialisations in existing programmes to provide students with more diverse learning opportunities. Our curriculum development team is working closely with industry experts and academic professionals to design these courses, ensuring they meet current and future job market demands.
