NEW DELHI: Delhi University (DU) has issued a notification clarifying its policy regarding teachers taking leave during the mid-semester break. The clarification comes in response to queries concerning faculty members traveling to outstations without formally applying for leave during the break.

According to the notice, the mid-semester break is only for students and does not extend to teachers. Faculty members are expected to remain on duty unless they have submitted a formal leave request. The university emphasised that any teacher intending to be absent during this period must apply for the appropriate leave, following the standard procedure.

Background wave

"This has reference to your letter dated 29/07/2024 seeking clarification in A respect of teachers proceeding to out station without taking leave during semester break. In this regard, I am directed to inform you that the mid semester break is only for the students not for the teachers", the official notice read.

"If any teacher wants to take leave during the semester break, the concerned teacher will be required to apply appropriate leave for the period", the notification added. This directive has been issued with the approval of the Competent Authority at Delhi University to ensure clarity and uniformity in the application of leave policies for faculty members.

Teachers voice frustration on social media platforms

Some teachers have expressed frustration, pointing out that the mid-semester break is often seen as a chance to recharge or catch up on personal matters, just like students. They argue that faculty members should also be entitled to the break, especially considering the high workload throughout the semester.

"Many teachers are not from Delhi, they need to meet families. Many more also use these small breaks for conferences etc given they do not wish to waste teaching time. This mid semester break uses Diwali holiday and other RH. Now, DU wants teachers to use their leaves to be with their families?", a Professor at DU said on facebook.
