NIRF Rankings 2024 Released: The ministry of education has announced a common overall rank as well as a discipline-specific rank for participating institutions.

NEW DELHI: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking 2024 has been announced by the Union ministry of education (MoE). The officials informed that three new categories namely open universities, skill universities, and state-funding public universities, have been added and the top higher education institutions have been ranked under 16 categories. The NIRF Rankings 2024 PDF is available on the official website, nirfindia.org. IIT Madras has retained its top position under the engineering category for seven years now, since the inception of India Rankings.
The ninth-edition of the NIRF India ranking 2024 has been published for 16 categories namely, overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental, innovation, agriculture and allied sectors, and research institutions.
IIT Madras was announced as the best institute in the overall and engineering categories. IISC Bengaluru bagged the best university position and Delhi University’s Miranda House emerged as the number one college, last year.

The NIRF was approved by the ministry of human resource development (MHRD), which is now called the ministry of education, on September 29, 2015. The parameters and methodology to rank institutions across the country were framed by the core committee set up by the erstwhile MHRD. The parameters broadly cover teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practices; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
Since its inception, NIRF rankings have been based on this framework. “However, there are a few significant changes in a few sub-parameters. Also, this year every large institution will be given a common overall rank as well as a discipline specific rank as applicable,” the ministry said.

Jamia Millia Islamia is the third best university in India, as per the NIRF rankings 2024 announced today for the universities category. University of Delhi made a debut this year in the list of top 10 universities in India by securing the 10th position.

Replacing a top Delhi University college, Miranda House, another top DU institute Hindu College emerged as the best college in the country in the NIRF rankings 2024. The college, located in the north campus of DU, offers 19 undergraduate and 14 postgraduate programmes.
In the overall category of the NIRF rankings 2024, engineering institutes dominate the list. Seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have secured spots in the list of 10 best overall institutions in India which also includes Indian Institute of Science (IISc), AIIMS Delhi, and JNU.
The newest IIM, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has been placed at the sixth position in the NIRF ranking management 2024. The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) was converted into the IIM in August last year.

Pune's Symbiosis Skills and Professional University is the best skill university in India. The education ministry introduced the new 'skill universities' category this year wherein three universities have been given ranks. Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, Palwal has secured the second position while Bhartiya Skill Development University, Jaipur has been placed at the third spot.
In the newly introduced open universities category in the NIRF rankings, three institutions have been ranked. While Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is the best open university in India, Netaji Subhash Open University, Kolkata has grabbed the second position. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad came third.
While the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is the best engineering institute, IIT Roorkee has snapped the first rank in the architecture and planning category this year.

In one of the new categories announced this year for the NIRF rankings, state public universities, Anna University has grabbed the first rank followed by Jadavpur University. Savitribai Phule Pune University is among the top 3 state public universities.
This year, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta moved to the fifth position in the management ranking in the NIRF rankings 2024 while IIT Delhi replaced it to move to the 4th spot.

A total of 10,885 institutions across India applied for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2024 this year. Every year, the higher education institutions are invited to participate in the domestic rankings by registering on the official website.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Surathkal will be ranked in the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2024. During an interview with Careers360, responding to the drop in position in the rankings, the institute director said that the NIT still ranks higher than many new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). In his view, ranking has become a race to increase the numbers, such as publishing of papers and number of patents. In half hour, the Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will release the India Rankings 2024 for higher education institutes and award the top-ranking institutes.
The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) continues to be the ranking agency on behalf of NIRF. “NIRF, by itself or with the help of other suitably identified partner agencies will also undertake authentication of data, wherever felt necessary, and where feasible. It will extract the relevant information from this data and through software, compute the various metrics and rank institutions based on this data,” the official website read. The NBA was established by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) under section 10(u) of AICTE Act, in the year 1994.

NIRF Rankings 2024 | NIT Tiruchirappalli has maintained its position at rank 21 for the past two years in the NIRF ranking. The overall NIRF India ranking of NIT Karnataka, which was 32 and 27 in the previous years, dropped to 38 last year. NIT Calicut grabbed rank 54 and entered in the top 100 best institutes in India.

Five out of the top 10 colleges in India are affiliated to Delhi University, according to last year’s MoE NIRF rankings. Miranda House has retained its top position last year as well, however, the ranking of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, one of the most sought after DU colleges, dropped last year to rank 10.

Sharda University grabbed NIRF rank 87 last year with a 44.11 score. Last year, out of around 40,000 institutions in the country, 8,686 were evaluated, based on which the top 100 institutions in each category were announced.
All institutions have to mandatorily host the data submitted for India Rankings 2023 for a period of three years on their official website. Institutions who fail to post the data submitted to NIRF on their official websites, or those who do not have websites of their own, will be given initial notice and afterwards an appropriate action will be taken.
Banaras Hindu University (BHU) was ranked number 5 in NIRF rankings 2023. The BHU was ranked 7 in 2016 and later improved to rank 3 in 2021. However, the NIRF ranking dropped by 2 places last year. Take a look at the NIRF score obtained by the BHU in the last three years.

The Union ministry of education will announce the NIRF rankings 2024 for top engineering, medical, law, management, research and others today at 3 pm.
The ministry of education will also announce discipline specific rank for highly-focused institutions with a single main discipline such as engineering, medical, law, management, pharmacy or UG degree colleges in arts, science, and commerce, etc. with less than 1,000 enrolled students, as calculated on the basis of approved intake.

This year, all candidate institutions, independent of their discipline or nature (comprehensive or otherwise) will be given a common overall rank. The institutions that satisfy one of the following criteria will be considered for a common overall ranking. “The parameters have been chosen in such a manner that these are equally relevant for various kinds of educational institutions,” the ministry said.
They have a total of at least 1,000 enrolled students, calculated on the basis of approved intake, OR
The institution is a centrally funded institution/university of the Government of India.
While the NIRF engineering ranking of Jadavpur university improved from rank 17 to rank 10 in two years, the overall NIRF ranking slipped one rank from 12 to 13 in 2023.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) bagged the second and third place in NIRF 2023 respectively. Saveetha Engineering College has submitted data for the NIRF ranking 2024 for the engineering and innovation categories. According to the data, the college, affiliated to the Anna University, had 1,260 undergraduate seats and 144 postgraduate. The student strength is over 4,000 for UG and 160 for PG. 852 students graduated last year of which 824 were placed while 21 went for higher studies.
The research institutions category, added to the categories under NIRF ranking in the recent years, found the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as the top research institute in India. One of the top central universities in India, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) secured the 5th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking last year in the university category. The Varanasi-based university grabbed the 8th spot in NIRF rankings for medical colleges. It also ranked 11th in the overall category and 16th among the top research institutions. The university was placed on the 56th position in the NIRF management rankings. In the dental category of the India rankings, BHU was 18th in the list. Moreover, the university also ranked in the law, engineering, and agriculture categories in the previous year's rankings of the higher education institutes across India.

The engineering college located in West Bengal is one of the oldest institutes. Launched in 1856 as a civil engineering college, IIEST was initially called with the names, Bengal Engineering College, Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU). It became a centrally-funded institute in the year 2014. The institute is still grappling with the issues of vacant faculty positions, seats, poor infrastructure, among others.

The human resource development ministry approved and launched the NIRF rankings in September 2015. The first-ever India rankings were released in 2016 based on a framework to rank academic institutions across the country. Under the rankings, institutes are asked to apply and submit data based on which they are given a Common Overall Rank and discipline-wise ranking.
According to the eligibility criteria, those having at least 1,000 students or centrally-funded institutions or universities will be eligible for a rank.
