NEW DELHI: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking 2024 has been announced by the Union ministry of education (MoE). The officials informed that three new categories namely open universities, skill universities, and state-funding public universities, have been added and the top higher education institutions have been ranked under 16 categories. The NIRF Rankings 2024 PDF is available on the official website, nirfindia.org. IIT Madras has retained its top position under the engineering category for seven years now, since the inception of India Rankings.
The ninth-edition of the NIRF India ranking 2024 has been published for 16 categories namely, overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental, innovation, agriculture and allied sectors, and research institutions.
IIT Madras was announced as the best institute in the overall and engineering categories. IISC Bengaluru bagged the best university position and Delhi University’s Miranda House emerged as the number one college, last year.

The NIRF was approved by the ministry of human resource development (MHRD), which is now called the ministry of education, on September 29, 2015. The parameters and methodology to rank institutions across the country were framed by the core committee set up by the erstwhile MHRD. The parameters broadly cover teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practices; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
Since its inception, NIRF rankings have been based on this framework. “However, there are a few significant changes in a few sub-parameters. Also, this year every large institution will be given a common overall rank as well as a discipline specific rank as applicable,” the ministry said.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Surathkal will be ranked in the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2024. During an interview with Careers360, responding to the drop in position in the rankings, the institute director said that the NIT still ranks higher than many new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). In his view, ranking has become a race to increase the numbers, such as publishing of papers and number of patents. While these factors are important for the new institutes to attract the students, encourage the faculty, and improve placements, the well-established IITs and NITs "should focus on the quality of their output against global benchmarks as well as local socio-economic impact," he said.

NIRF Ranking 2024: How are Indian universities ranked?
NIRF India Rankings 2024 | The Indian universities and colleges are ranked based on the five parameters, which are further elaborated into relevant sub-parameters. Each parameter will carry an overall weightage with appropriate weight distribution for various sub-parameters. “The methodology is based on developing a set of metrics for ranking of academic institutions, based on the parameters agreed upon by the core committee”.
- The institutions will be ranked broadly based on the five parameters - teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
- An attempt is also made to identify the relevant data needed to suitably measure the performance score under each category. Emphasis here is on identifying data that the institution can easily provide or is easy to obtain from third party sources and easily verifiable, where verification is needed. This is important in the interest of transparency.
- A suitable metric is then proposed based on this data, which computes a score under each sub-head.
- The sub-head scores are then added to obtain scores for each individual head. The overall score is computed based on the weights allotted to each head. The overall score can take a maximum value of 100.
- The institutions is then be rank-ordered.
