NIRF Ranking 2024 University: Jamia Millia Islamia and MAHE get third and fourth spots, respectively; Delhi University enters list of top 10 with Rank 6

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have retained their first and second positions, respectively, in the universities category of the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking and Framework (NIRF) 2024. This year, Delhi University has made an entry in the top 10 universities category, securing the sixth rank.
The rankings were released by education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and minister of state for education, Sukanta Majumdar.
IISc Bangalore has been in the top spot of the universities category since the inception of the NIRF rankings.

Leaving the top three positions secured by IISc, JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia, there are several changes in the NIRF rankings this year.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education has jumped two ranks to the fourth position this year from the sixth in 2023. This year University of Delhi has bagged the sixth position – a massive jump from the 11th position in 2023. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has also moved one rank up to eighth this year from ninth last year.
However, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has also retained its fifth position.
It is Jadavpur University (JU) and Vellore Institute of Technology’s (VIT) which have slides down to ninth and 10th ranks, respectively. In NIRF 2023, while JU was in fourth position, VIT was in the eighth.
This year University of Hyderabad has failed to make it to the top 10.
This year three new categories were introduced – open universities, skill universities and state public funded universities.
In the NIRF 2024, open universities category, Indira Gandhi National Open University is on top, followed by Netaji Subhash Open University, Kolkata, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad.
Under the skill university category, Symbiosis Skill and Professional University, Pune, is on the top, followed by Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, Palwal, and Bharatiya Skill Development University, Jaipur.
In the state skill university category, Anna University, Chennai, is in first position, followed by Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, in the second and third position respectively.
