NIRF Ranking 2025 (Out) LIVE: IIT Madras retains top spot in overall India rankings for 10th consecutive year

This year, the Savitribai Phule Pune University’s (SPPU) position has seen a decline in several categories. SSPU has cited the fall in rankings due to a shortage of faculty members.  As per the NIRF Rankings 2025, SSPU is placed at 91st in overall, 56th among universities, and 11th in public state universities category.

Tamil Nadu held the largest share of ranking of institutions in higher education in the country as per the results of the 10th edition of NIRF India Ranking, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Thursday. This success reflected the state’s inclusive higher education ecosystem, spread across regions and opening opportunities for students from every background, he asserted.

"With 17 institutions among the Top 100 in the Overall category, 33 among the Top 100 in the College category, and 10 among the Top 50 in the State Public University category, our state holds the largest share across these lists," he said in a X post. 

According to the official JNU statement, the JNU has been declared the best multidisciplinary public university 4th consecutive year. JNU VC has thanked the government of India, prime minister Narendra Modi, and our minister of education Dharmendra Pradhan for the continued support and encouragement.

As per the data released by the ministry of education, a total of  the 58.31% management institutions and 31.47% colleges that participated in NIRF Rankings 2025 had zero research publications.

NIRF Rankings 2025 | IIT Bombay has been ranked 3rd in the overall category, 3rd in engineering, 14th in management, 4th in research and 2nd in the ‘Innovation’ category.

Commenting on the Institute’s performance, the director Shireesh Kedare said: “We are happy to maintain our strong performance in the NIRF Rankings. They are an important nationwide process of assessment and benchmarking. At the same time, it reminds us that all of us must continue to work collectively to strengthen India’s education system. The competition among institutions is healthy, as it encourages us to raise our standards and contribute more effectively to the nation’s growth.”

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu has secured 35th position under the management category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. 

The director of IIM Jammu, on this milestone achievement, thanked Minister of Education, Government of India, Dharmendra Pradhan. He also commended the dedication of the faculty, officers, staff, students, and alumni of IIM Jammu, whose collective commitment has been pivotal in achieving this recognition and further highlighted that this year, the Institute has also secured two prestigious international accreditations, the BGA Institutional Accreditation and the EFMD programme accreditation for its MBA programme. 

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that Jadavpur University (JU) was the only state varsity in the top 10 of the university list. "Happy to share that our pre-eminence in education is recognised again. The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has announced the rankings of Higher Education Institutes of the country today, namely India Ranking 2025 (NIRF)," Banerjee wrote on X. 

"This year, in the State Public University category, Jadavpur University is ranked first in the country, and 9th among all the Universities in all the categories in the country. It is the only State university to be in the top 10 of the University list," she added. With inputs from PTI

The Indian Institute of Management Lucknow has gained 5th position under the ‘Management’ category in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2025.

IIM Lucknow has gained the 5th position in the management category, improving from rank 7  in the NIRF Rankings 2024. 

The top 10 NIRF India Rankings 2025 for engineering colleges is as follows. 

As per NIRF India Rankings 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee is ranked at 1st position, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut at 2nd position, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur at 3rd position for BArch programmes.

As per NIRF Indian Rankings 2025 in the engineering category, COEP Technological University, Pune, is ranked at 90th position.

As per India Rankings 2025 in the university category, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is the best university in India.

The education ministry published the NIRF Ranking 2025 today, September 4. According to the NIRF India Rankings 2025 in the college category, Miranda House is ranked in 2nd position. As per the data shared by Miranda House, a total of 1,320 intakes were approved for the 4-year undergraduate programme and 407 for the 2-year postgraduate programme.

Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, retains the No. 1 position among pharmacy colleges in NIRF ranking 2025. BITS Pilani moves up to second place, pushing NIPER Hyderabad to fifth, while Panjab University rises to third. ICT Mumbai drops to sixth, JJ College of Pharmacy, Mysore to seventh, and SRM IST, Chennai enters the top 10 at tenth, displacing SVKM’s Narsee Monjee IMS, Mumbai to 11th.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has retained the number 1 spot in the NIRF 2025 Open Universities category, continuing its role in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online education in India. Reacting to this achievement, Uma Kanjilal, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU, expressed her gratitude to all members of the IGNOU fraternity. “This milestone has been made possible by the dedicated efforts of our faculty, academic, and non-academic staff. At IGNOU, our mission remains clear — to provide affordable, quality education to everyone, everywhere," the vice-chancellor said.

"Going forward, we will strengthen our focus on leveraging digital and technological tools to ensure ease of accessibility, even in the remotest parts of the country. We will continue to expand the use of vernacular languages, multimedia, video-based resources, and blended learning approaches so that education reaches learners in the most inclusive and learner-friendly manner,” she further said.

Jadavpur University, Kolkata tops the state public university category, IGNOU is ranked first among open universities, and Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, Pune leads the skill universities list in NIRF 2025. The 10th edition of the rankings saw 14,163 institutions across 17 categories, with IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, and IIM Ahmedabad leading engineering, university, and management categories, respectively.

AIIMS Delhi has retained the top position in the Medical category of NIRF 2025 and has also debuted as No. 1 in Dental, overtaking Chennai’s Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, which had topped the dental rankings in the previous three cycles. PGIMER Chandigarh is ranked second in the medical category. This year, a negative scoring system was introduced for retractions, which affected Saveetha’s ranking following concerns over self-citations and retracted publications.

A total of 14,163 institutions participated in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 across various categories and disciplines. These included 4,045 in the Overall category, 1,584 in Engineering, 1,026 in Management, 4,030 Colleges, and 791 in the newly introduced Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category, among others.

Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, Pune, formerly known as Symbiosis Skill and Open University, has been placed at the top in the Skill Universities category.

As part of the NIRF Ranking 2025 process, participation was recorded through both pre-registration and new registration. In pre-registration, 6,927 institutions registered, with 6,398 completing submissions. Under the new registration, 1,936 candidates registered, taking the total to 8,863 registered participants and 7,692 submissions.

In the news category introduced this year, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) ranking recognizes higher education institutions for their performance in sustainability and contributions toward the UN’s SDGs. In NIRF 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has secured the top position in this category, followed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, in second place, and Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, in third.

IIT Madras has retained the top spot in NIRF 2025, ranking number 1 in engineering for the 10th consecutive year and overall for the 7th year. It also secured top rank in Innovations and the newly introduced SDG category. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said, "Being a topper consistently is a result of a collective, cohesive, and focused team effort. Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi has been ranked first in the NIRF 2025 agriculture and allied sector rankings. The table below lists the top five institutes in India in agriculture and allied sector category.

Once again, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has won the top spot in the India rankings 2025 for the medicine category. The top five medical colleges in India as per NIRF 2025 rankings are as follows:

The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has retained the top position in the NIRF ranking 2025 management category for the sixth row. IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode closely followed by securing the second and third places.

The Ministry of Education officially announced the NIRF 2025 rankings today, September 4, 2025. In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad has retained its position as the top institute in India. This marks the sixth consecutive year the institute has been ranked number one.

As per NIRF 2025 ranking for the overall category, the top 10 higher education institutes in India are as follows:

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan is now announcing the NIRF ranking 2025, 10th edition of the India rankings 2025 report for the higher education institutions.

The new category on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the NIRF 2025 will examine higher education institutions in terms of green initiatives and environment-friendly practices. 

A total of 14,163 higher education institutions participated across nine categories and eight subjects in the NIRF ranking 2025, says minister of education Sukanta Majumdar. 

India rankings 2025 should not be used as a means for marketing but as a tool to inform the students about the best colleges in India, said higher education secretary Vineet Joshi. 

There will be a third party verification of outliers, said professor Sahasrabudhe while talking about the new features of India rankings 2025. 

In India rankings 2025, 19 parameters have been categorised into five broad parameters. The colleges and universities in India will be ranked based on the parameters. 

The 10th consecutive edition of the NIRF ranking will be announced shortly, the event has started at Bharat Mandapam with the presence of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. 

From NIRF 2025 rankings onwards, negative marking for retracted papers and removal of citations has been introduced in the National Institutional Ranking Framework, shares Anil Sahasrabudhe.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Puducherry ranked 97 in the engineering category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) last year. The NIT improved its ranking from previous years and jumped several places up. 

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is the best research institute and overall second top university in India, as per NIRF rankings last year. 

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been dominating NIRF engineering ranking for nine years and eyes the 10th win in NIRF 2025 rankings. Why? Well, because the institute seems to have a strong image, reputation, and teaching resources, as per its scores.

BITS Pilani emerged as the 20th best engineering college in India in NIRF rankings last year. Birla Institute of Technology also ranked 23rd in the overall category and secured the 19th in university.

SPJIMR, which has been ranking on top in other rankings, thinks that NIRF is measuring the wrong things, especially in the research category. According to the management school's dean, research quantity and quality is what NIRF looks for, and this is the area where the B-school lags behind.

Among the top dental colleges in India, Chennai-based Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences was placed on top in NIRF rankings for dental category last year. Manipal College of Dental Sciences closely followed while Delhi's famous Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences secured the third rank. 

When it comes to NIRF college ranking, the best colleges in India are usually from University of Delhi with Hindu College being on top, Miranda House being the second, and St Stephen's College somewhere around the fourth position. Either of the first two colleges are expected to retain the top spot in the NIRF ranking 2025 for the college category this year. 

SRM University, also known as SRM Institute of Science and Technology, is a private deemed university in Tamil Nadu's Chennai. The institute clinched 11th spot in pharmacy, 12th position in university, 13th rank in engineering, 21st in overall, and 24th in research categories in the NIRF rankings last year. 

As per NIRF rankings, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru is the top university in India. The institute ranked first in the NIRF university ranking category last year with an overall score of 83.29.

The Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, situated in Jharkhand's Ranchi, secured the 48th rank in NIRF engineering ranking last year. The institute improved its previous ranking and jumped from 53 to 48. This year's NIRF ranking 2025 list engineering will be out soon and we'll get to know if the BIT further climbs up or not.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru, retained its top position among law schools in India as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking last year. The following five are the top law colleges in the country as per NIRF. 

Jamia Hamdard has been ranking first in NIRF pharmacy category for years. The institute also secured the 40th rank in NIRF engineering ranking last year. The education ministry will announce the NIRF ranking 2025 pharmacy soon and the university is expected to retain the top spot. 

This year, India rankings 2025 are undergoing major changes including a new category on sustainability and negative marking for research papers, as per media reports. Institutes will be negatively marked for retraction of research papers.

The NIRF architecture ranking category was introduced in 2018. IIT Kharagpur was ranked number 1 in this category in 2018 and maintained its position till 2021. For the last four years, IIT Roorkee has retained its top spot among architecture colleges. This year's NIRF architecture ranking 2025 will be announced soon.

Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar ranked 54 in the NIRF rankinglast year for the engineering category.

Chandigarh University was placed 20th in the NIRF university ranking last year. The university saw a 14% improvement in its scores. Recently, it bagged the top spot among private universities in India, as per the QS Asia University Rankings 2025.

NIRF ranking 2025 will be based on five parameters:

• Teaching, Learning, and Resources
• Research and Professional Practice (RP)
• Graduation Outcomes (GO)
• Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)
• Peer Perception

Colleges and universities are ranked across 16 categories. In the overall category, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru was ranked number 2 and IIT Delhi was ranked number 2 in engineering list.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has continuously retained its top position in the NIRF engineering ranking since the inception of the MoE India rankings in 2016. Last year as well, IIT Madras – with highest scores of 86.42 and 89.46 – was ranked number 1 in overall and engineering categories.

The NIRF rankings are usually announced in June-July. However, this year, the rankings were delayed due to an interim stay imposed by the Madras High Court over a plea challenging the lack of transparency and date irregularities. 

The education ministry has announced that it will publish the NIRF ranking 2025 PDF on September 4 at 11 am. Last year, the NIRF ranking was published at around 3 pm. Take a look at past trends.

This year's NIRF ranking was delayed due to the interim stay imposed by the Madras High Court. A plea challenged the transparency of the ranking process and data submitted by the institutions.

As per NIRF Rankings 2025, HEIs were ranked in 16 categories, including overall, engineering, medical, management, pharmacy, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, law, skill university, open university, dental, innovation, state public university, colleges, research institutions, and universities.

The NIRF Rankings 2024 for various categories are as follows. 

NIRF Rankings 2025 were launched in 2015. The rankings serve as a benchmark for students to decide on the universities and colleges for admission.
