AIIMS Delhi has also been ranked first in the dental category, where it has entered for the first time, toppling Chennai’s Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences to second place.
While AIIMS has consistently been ranked first ever since the medical category was added to NIRF in 2018, it has further slipped to the eighth position in the overall institute ranking from seventh and sixth positions it claimed in 2024 and 2023 rankings, respectively.
Saveetha Institute, which was at the peak in the dental category in the last three ranking cycles, has faced criticism over alleged unethical practices in research – specifically, the large number of self-citations in its academic papers – and had to retract several publications. This year, for the first time, a negative scoring system was introduced for retractions.
NIRF 2025: PGIMR Chandigarh, CMC Vellore retain spots
The 10th edition of India Rankings 2025, released by the union education ministry on Thursday, saw the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMR), Chandigarh and the Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, maintain their second and third positions, respectively, in the medical list since 2018.
However, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, which occupied the fourth rank among medical institutes, no longer features among the top five.
