'Inhuman conditions': NLSIU Bengaluru students protest over water shortage in women's hostel

Students at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru have gathered at the campus basketball court in an ongoing protest against a series of life issues, particularly the lack of water supply. The demonstration has been going on for over four hours with students vowing to remain until the NLSIU vice chancellor provides an assurance.

According to an official statement, NLSIU students stated that they were “forced to live in inhumane” conditions with concerns being unheard for months with no concrete measures being undertaken.

“ Students have been gathered at the basketball court and have been protesting for over four hours. Despite repeated demands and requests from the students, the Vice Chancellor has not come to address them. We are prepared to continue the protest until the Vice Chancellor meets the students and provides concrete, student-friendly solutions to the issues being faced by them,” the statement reads.

Rs 1.2 lakh NLSIU hostel fee

As per the students, there is a complete lack of water supply in the Women’s hostel for several hours today.

Protesting students said that the water taps, flushes and jet sprays usually stop working, while water coolers do not dispense drinking water at times, The Hindu reported.

On several occasions, students have reported unclean water supply and said that the problem becomes difficult during summer, and in packed hostel rooms, the report said.

The university’s annual fees range from Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, with over Rs 1.2 lakh allocated to hostel accommodation, the report added.

The report, citing a final-year student, stated that men’s hostels have 18 bunk beds, women’s have 93, while in the same hostel blocks, 36 women are sharing three toilets.
