The National Medical Commission (NMC) has invited postgraduate (PG) medical students under the District Residency Programme (DRP) to provide healthcare services to help people in recently flood-affected regions. NMC recognises this opportunity as a valuable component of PG training for medical students.

Accordingly, the deployment of PG medical students in the flood-affected region of the northern states and UTs is considered as a part of DRP training.

“In view of the recent floods/disaster-like situations in the northern states and UTs of the country, there is an urgent requirement for healthcare professionals as part of the ongoing relief measures,” the official NMC notice said.

NMC has directed nodal officers of the respective states and UTs to do such postings of students undergoing the DRP programme as per the requirement.

Under the DRP initiative, PG medical students will not only provide healthcare services at the field level, but they will also allow professionals to gain experience in disaster response, public health management, and community service, thereby enhancing their overall training.

“The ministry of home affairs has also appealed for healthcare services to be strengthened through available resources, and several post-graduate doctors have expressed their willingness to volunteer their services,” the official NMC notice adds.
