NEW DELHI: The Punjab government on Monday advanced summer vacations for schools amid intense heatwave prevailing in the region and mercury nearing 45 degrees Celsius. The government has announced summer vacations for all government, private, aided and other schools in the state from tomorrow, May 21.
Schools in the state will remain closed till June 30. This decision advance the Punjab school summer vacations is to ensure the health and well-being of students during the peak of the summer season.
On Sunday, the Punjab government issued an advisory recommending that schools operate from 7 am to 12 noon. However, due to the extreme temperatures, the government later revised its decision and announced that schools would remain closed starting Tuesday.
As summer vacations for Punjab schools have been moved up due to the orange alert for severe heatwaves in the state. This decision came after receiving feedback from various districts about the difficulties students were facing because of the extreme weather conditions.
Initially, schools were scheduled to begin their summer break on June 1, but the vacations will now start earlier.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government also changes school timings from May 18 to May 31 amid intense heatwave. Rajasthan government also declared summer vacation for students till June 30. The governmant warned the schools to not hold any extra classes during this time.
Northern India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 47°C in Delhi and severe weather alerts in place. Regions such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi are facing extreme heat conditions, prompting warnings from the India Meteorological Department.
