Holiday has been declared for classes 1 to 12 in schools in Thane, Panvel, Pune, Lonavala districts amid the IMD yellow alert. The Education Department of the Thane District Council has announced to shut all schools on August 20.

Mumbai University has also postponed the semester exams due to heavy rainfall across the city. The exams have been rescheduled on August 23.

The IMD has issued warning for heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorm for Maharashtra's Palghar, Mumbai suburban, Mumbai city, Thane, Pune, Raigad. While, several districts in Gujarat such as Devbhoomi, Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Amreli have also been under the heavy rainfall radar.

On August 18, the IMD issued a red warning and predicted heavy rainfall across many places in Mumbai suburb, low lying areas. Following the warning, the BMC closed all educational institutions for the afternoon session.

An incident was reported when a school bus carrying 6 students and two staff members was stuck on a waterlogged road in Mumbai. Fortunately, all the children were rescued and reached home safely.

The Mumbai Police issued a warning and urged all the citizens to step out only if necessary.

"Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist. In case of any emergency, please dial 100 / 112 / 103. Your safety always comes first,” the Mumbai police said in its X account.

The weather department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, and nearby coastal districts, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and other areas, warning of heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

Several low-lying areas in the city, such as Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex, experienced waterlogging, disrupting traffic and causing delays in local trains, public transport.

BMC clarifies fake holiday news for Mumbai schools

The BMC, through its X account, clarifies that schools in Mumbai are remain open on August 20. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said; "“This message is fake. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not issued any such information through its official social media platforms,” the civic body said in a post on its official X handle."

Mumbai schools closed amid red alert?

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Mumbai and neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts. The department has also issued red alert for Raigad district, and heavy pouring in several places. 

According to the Times New report, Mumbai schools are not closed today, the BMC clarified today. However, all schools in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Panvel and Lonavala have been closed due to torrential rainfall for past two days.

Pune, Navi Mumbai schools closed today; BMC issues helpline

Maharashtra's districts such as Pune, Navi Mumbai and Karnataka district have issued closure of schools due to heavy pouring, and IMD's yellow alert. 

"The Brihanmumbai (Mumbai city and suburbs) region has experienced extremely heavy rainfall over the past two days. Additionally, continuous rain has been ongoing since midnight on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Central Railway, Western Railway, and Harbour Railway services, along with 'BEST' transportation, are operating smoothly," the BMC said on its X account.

The municipal corporation has developed an Emergency Control Room at the helpline number 1916, as appealed by the Municipal Corporation administration.
