Tamil Nadu scraps Class 11th public exam under new State Education Policy 2025

According to the newly introduced Tamil Nadu State Education Policy 2025, the government has cancelled the TN Class 11th public exam. From this year onwards, board exams will be conducted for Classes 10 and 12 only.

Under the new education policy, Class 11 will be treated as a preparatory and transition year, focusing on subject enrichment, skill development, and academic readiness through competency-based internal assessments.

The policy is viewed as an alternative to the Centre’s National Education Policy (NEP). With this, Tamil Nadu becomes the first state to introduce its education policy based on the set of recommendations made by a 14-member panel headed by retired Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, D Murugesan.

Reduced stress for Class 11 students

The new approach will help students reduce exam-related stress, encourage deeper understanding of the subject, and ensure students prepare for the Class 12 exam with more focus. The new system will also promote a balanced and student-friendly evaluation system across the higher secondary stage.

TN board exams to assess conceptual clarity

TN board exams 2025 for Class 10 and 12 will assess conceptual understanding, application, problem solving, and creative thinking rather than rote memorisation among students. The new diversified assessment mode will include oral tests, practicals, group activities, and project work.

Under the new state education policy, students preparing for Class 10 and 12 board exams will see reduced emotional stress and will help them to maintain academic standards, giving improved results.

No-detention policy for Classes 1 to 8

The Tamil Nadu government upheld the no-detention policy for Classes 1 to 8 in the new state education policy. The NDP promotes a shift from high-stakes, end-of-year exams to continuous, supportive, and competency-based assessments. Ensuring automatic promotion upto Class 8 will promote competency attainment through personalised support.
