The Telangana health minister, Damodar Raja Narasimha, has announced a 15% hike in stipends for MBBS interns, PG doctors, super specialty students and senior residents. According to the government order, the monthly stipend for home surgeons has been increased from Rs 25,906 to Rs 29,792.

The state health minister also directed the officials to ensure stipends are credited on time every month without delay. The resident doctors have been demanding for timely disbursement of stipends for several months now. In May, the resident doctors also wore black badges to protest against the persistent delay and continued violation of government orders.

However, the decision to increase the stipends for all resident doctors and interns has been welcomed by the medicos.

“Telangana has increased the stipend for resident doctors. Already they had one of the highest stipends in India. This is even double than neighboring state AP. This is how medical education should be encouraged,” Shekhar Bandaru, a X user wrote.

“The Government of Telangana, in a decisive and progressive step, has enhanced the stipend for MBBS interns to ₹29,792/month and for Postgraduate scholars to ₹67,032/month, a 15% hike that reflects a state’s recognition of its medical workforce,” another user said.

Moreover, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given permission to 34 medical colleges in Telangana to admit students for undergraduate medical courses.
