MBBS dream of 43,400 on hold as aspirants await Telangana NEET UG 2025 counselling dates

For around 43,400 candidates from Telangana — who qualified the NEET UG 2025 exam — the wait for MBBS admission continues as the state counselling has been delayed amid the legal scrutiny of the 4-year domicile rule.

The last update from the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal, conducting body of the Telangana NEET UG counselling 2025, was for the PwD candidates, who were instructed to complete their document verification in slots scheduled on August 11 and 12.

Although the Telangana NEET UG counselling 2025 began as scheduled, the court order on the 4-year study rule for claiming reservation under domicile remains pending. The registration deadline was extended multiple times after the application window was opened on July 16.

Telangana domicile rule under legal scrutiny

Along with the admission schedule, the KNRUHS had also notified the 4-year study rule, which mandates that candidates should have studied or resided in Telangana for at least four consecutive years, up to Class 12, before appearing for the NEET exam, to be eligible for domicile reservation.

The new residency policy was introduced last year to give fair chances to local students. The state government defended its policy, but the high court rejected the rule last year allowing students who studied outside the state to be treated as local residents.

Later, the Telangana government filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court challenging the high court ruling. The KNRUHS had also notified about the pending case in its official MBBS notification. ““Admissions are subject to the final outcome of the pending SLPs in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India,” it read.

The apex court, which heard the matter in the first week of June, sought a response from the state within 4 weeks. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court reserved the verdict on Telangana domicile rule for MBBS admissions.
