Thapar Institute to propose ISRO launch for 'Thaparsat Pollution Satellite'

NEW DELHI: The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) announced on May 28 that it will soon submit a proposal to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the launch of its first student satellite, 'Thaparsat.' The satellite programme, known as the Thapar Satellite Programme, aims to monitor environmental issues and real-time pollution levels in Punjab and the northern region of India, according to a statement.

The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology initiated the Thapar Satellite Programme four years ago, taking a significant step towards providing experiential education to its students in engineering and technological development related to satellite building and space missions.

The purpose of Thaparsat is to monitor real-time pollution caused by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, as well as measure soil moisture content in northern India.

The TIET team, led by Mamata Gulati, a professor at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, will soon submit a proposal to ISRO to initiate the launch process for the Thaparsat satellite.

Founded in 1956, TIET is one of the country's oldest educational institutions.
