THE Rankings 2025: IISc Bangalore ranked in the 251-300 band while Anna University jumped to the second spot in India.

NEW DELHI: While retaining the top spot in India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore lost its rank in the top 250 universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025. The institute featured in the top 251-300 universities globally this year while Anna University jumped to the second spot in India.
Besides the Chennai-based university, Kerala’s Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences climbed up to secure places in the top 401-500 universities in the THE rankings 2025. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences jumped several places up from 601-800 band to the top 500 universities this year.
While no Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) showed up among the top 500 institutions, IIT Indore grabbed a position in the 501-600 band. Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and University of Petroleum Studies (UPES) shared the rank with the IIT.
Among 14 Indian institutions which made their way to the 601-800 belt, several retained their positions including Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Chitkara University, KIIT University, Lovely Professional University (LPU), Panjab University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, and VIT University. Others which ranked in this belt are Amity University (Noida campus), Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS) Pilani, Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Symbiosis International University.
IIT Patna and International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad which were among the top 600 universities last year sank to the 601-800 band.
Tamil Nadu’s Alagappa University further lost a rank this year to feature in the 801-1000 range. Even Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), and Jamia Hamdard which were among the top 600 universities respectively came down to this band.
Moreover, three NITs – NIT Rourkela, NIT Silchar, and NIT Tiruchirappalli – grabbed spots among the top 1,000 universities along with University of Delhi (DU).
