UGC issues show cause notice to 18 medical colleges for non-compliance with anti-ragging regulations
UGC has directed colleges to mandate anti-ragging undertakings from students and parents in every academic year.

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a show cause notice to 18 medical colleges for failing to comply with anti-ragging regulations, 2009. As per the official notice, the UGC has observed that many colleges have not obtained anti-ragging undertakings from students and their parents, as required by the regulations.
As per UGC, this undertaking is a preventive measure aimed at ensuring a ragging-free environment within educational institutions. In its notice, UGC highlighted that securing the anti-ragging undertakings at the time of admission and at the beginning of each academic year is a non-negotiable requirement.
The UGC official notice read, “The failure to secure these undertakings not only constitutes non-compliance with the regulations but also puts the well-being and safety of the students at risk.”
Colleges directed to provide explanation within 7 days
The UGC has directed the ant-ragging non-compliant medical colleges to submit a written explanation within seven days of receiving the show cause notice. As per UGC, the non-compliant institutions are required to provide the reasons for their failure to secure these undertakings. Additionally, non-compliant colleges have been asked to outline the corrective steps they plan to implement immediately.
As per the UGC official notice, failure to provide a satisfactory response within the given time frame may lead to strict action, including penalties and other corrective measures as per the anti-ragging regulations, 2009. UGC has urged institutions to treat this matter with the utmost priority to prevent any legal or regulatory repercussions.
UGC’s directive for anti-ragging measures
The UGC has called for the establishment of anti-ragging committees, squads, and cells within institutions. Additionally, colleges are required to install CCTV cameras, conduct awareness workshops, and implement stringent monitoring mechanisms to curb ragging-related incidents. To enhance compliance, UGC has made it mandatory for students and their parents to submit an online anti-ragging undertaking every academic year.
Anti-Ragging Measures In HEIs: Surveillance and awareness initiatives
In an effort to create awareness, UGC has directed HEIs to prominently display anti-ragging posters in various locations, including admission centers, hostels, libraries, and canteens. The UGC has also recommended surprise inspections of student accommodations and common areas.
