The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has made some additions to the rules for rounding-off of marks and tie-breaking criteria for the Combined Medical Services (CMS) examination 2025. Accordingly, the marks obtained by the candidates in UPSC CMS 2025 exam will be rounded-off up to two decimal places and will be used to resolve the ties.

Regarding rounding-off of marks, UPSC stated, “Marks obtained by the candidates shall be rounded off up to two decimal digits, at all stage(s) of the examination, by applying the standard rounding off principle, wherever applicable. Accordingly, while applying the tie breaking principles, the rounded off marks up to two decimal digits shall be considered for resolving all tie cases.”

UPSC CMS 2025: Tie-breaking method

The following tie-breaking principle will be used in case two or more candidates obtain the same scores in the competitive exam:

  • If the marks in aggregate (final marks) are equal, the candidate securing greater marks in the written total will be given a higher rank
  • If the marks are still equal, the candidate younger in age will be ranked higher
  • If the date of birth is also same, the candidate whose date of completion of the internship is earlier, will be ranked higher
  • In cases where a tie persists even after applying the above principles, it will be resolved at the discretion of the commission.

UPSC held CMS exam 2025 on July 20 in two shifts. The recruitment drive aims to fill a total of 707 vacancies in various posts divided into category 1 and category 2.
