JKBOPEE to shift 50 SMVD MBBS students to govt medical colleges after NMC revokes college permission

After the National Medical Commission (NMC) revoked the permission for MBBS admissions at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Katra, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE) has announced a physical round of counselling to shift 50 provisionally admitted students to government medical colleges.

Vaishno Devi medical college has been facing opposition from right-wing organisations, a BJP-led Snagharsh Samiti, and non-Hindu aspirants over the admission of 42 Muslim students out of the total 50 seats.

Following this, the National Medical Commission (NMC), earlier this month, revoked the Letter of Permission (LoP) to the college, citing non-compliance with minimum standard requirements.

Subsequently, the ruling National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq recently submitted a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, calling upon the Centre to review the decision to revoke the permission for MBBS course to SMVD Medical College. The Congress party said that the number of Muslim students in the final admission list was higher because the area has a Muslim-majority population.

JK NEET UG 2025: Vacant supernumerary seats

After weeks of uncertainty, the JKBOPEE, as per the directions from the health and medical education department, has decided to conduct a physical counselling round for these 50 MBBS students on January 24 at 10 am. The seat allocation will be strictly based on the NEET UG merit list and preferences submitted by the candidates, it said.

The students who have been provisionally allotted seats will be shifted to seven government medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir. These 50 students will be accommodated against supernumerary seats created specifically for the academic year 2025-26.

“All the candidates are advised to report physically at the J&K BOPEE Office, Jammu/Srinagar, on the above date between 10.00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. for attendance and registration.” Students are required to carry all the original documents and domicile certificate for verification purposes.

The notification comes after the JKBOPEE, in a letter to the health department, said that it cannot conduct fresh counselling for these students and that the creation and allotment of supernumerary seats should be decided at the government level. It further stated that it is not mandated to go beyond the counselling schedule issued by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
