TNEA 2025: 15 Tamil Nadu engineering colleges report zero intake; Anna University asked to share deficiencies

At least 15 engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu have reported zero intake for the academic year 2025-26 under the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) process. The colleges have either been shut down, merged with parent institutions or recorded no new enrolments.

The list, analysed by career guidance expert R Ashwin, an alumnus of NIT Warangal, reveals a sharp fall in intake compared to previous years. Some of these institutions had seats in 2023 and 2024 but reported nil allotment in 2025.

Four colleges, including SNS College of Engineering, Sri Sai Ram Institute of Technology, Sri Krishna College of Technology, and P.S.R.R College of Engineering, have been merged with their parent institutions and are not admitting students separately this year under TNEA.

Arappor Iyakkam, a non-governmental organisation, has demanded Anna University to release the college-wise list of faculty shortages and laboratory deficiencies identified during the recent Affiliation Inspection process. It said that over 1.9 lakh students participating in TNEA 2025 counselling have the right to know the academic and infrastructure status of the colleges they are considering.

141 colleges get extension to fix deficiencies

According to Arappor Iyakkam, the inspection for affiliation of private engineering colleges under Anna University for the academic year 2025-26 has been completed. Although the university has identified issues related to faculty and infrastructure, it has granted 141 colleges an additional 45 days to rectify these deficiencies without releasing the detailed data to the public.

“Lakhs of students participating in the ongoing engineering counselling have a basic right to know the status of faculty availability, laboratory facilities, and infrastructure in the colleges they wish to join. Ensuring this transparency is a fundamental responsibility of the Higher Education Department,” the official press release said.

The organisation also referred to earlier reports that Anna University had issued notices to around 400 private engineering colleges, asking them to address specific deficiencies. However, with the counselling process having started on July 14 and set to conclude on August 26, students are exercising choice-filling and making decisions without having access to updated compliance information.

The group added that by the time the 45-day extension period ends, colleges will have already admitted students and begun academic sessions, raising concerns about how deficiencies would be addressed after admissions are finalised.

TNEA round 1 seat allotment on July 18

The TNEA choice-filling process is ongoing, and today is the last date to submit the course and college preferences. Eligible candidates can exercise the choice filling process for TNEA counselling 2025 through the official website at tneaonline.org. Following the completion of choice filling for TNEA round 1 counselling 2025, the tentative allotment of seats will be released on July 17.

The TNEA round 1 provisional seat allotment is scheduled to be issued on July 18. These candidates must report to their allotted colleges between July 19 and July 23. The final provisional allotment for upward movement candidates will be published on July 26.
