On Saturday, six medical college students of the PJNGMC were reportedly attacked by local youths near an old bus stand in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
Expressing concern over the sanctity and safety of medical campuses across the country, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has condemned the recent violent attack on MBBS students of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College (PJNGMC) in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
On Saturday, six medical college students of the PJNGMC were reportedly attacked by local youths near an old bus stand. The attackers used iron rods and sharp knives, leaving one student critically injured and five others with minor injuries.
“Such violence directed towards young doctors who are dedicating their lives to public service is absolutely unacceptable and an assault on the very ethos of a civilized society. FAIMA stands in full solidarity with the injured students, their families, and the entire medical fraternity of Pt. JLNGMCH,” the doctor’s federation said in an official statement.
Similar incidents of attack on medical students
FAIMA has demanded “an immediate, impartial, and time-bound investigation” into the incident and urged the Himachal Pradesh government and local administration to ensure strict security measures at all medical institutions across the hill state.
“It is imperative that the safety of doctors and medical students is treated as a priority and all measures are taken to prevent recurrence of such grievous incidents. We reiterate that violence against doctors is an attack on society itself,” it added.
On Monday, faculty members and intern doctors of the PJLNGMC staged a protest and marched to the deputy commissioner’s office, demanding strict actions against the culprits involved in the brutal assault on MBBS trainees.
This incident is not isolated. In February 2025, a group of intoxicated individuals entered the premises of Hassan Medical College in Karnataka and assaulted several PG, and MBBS students.
In another alarming case, an intern doctor was stabbed behind his ear and chin by local miscreants. Shockingly, the victim later alleged that he had been receiving threats for over six months prior to the attack.
