'West Bengal is hell for women': Durgapur gang-rape of Odisha medical student sparks outrage, no arrest so far

West Bengal bleeds again. A year after the RG Kar Medical College horror , another medical student from Odisha has been brutally gang-raped in West Bengal. The 2nd-year medical student was assaulted, dragged, and raped near a private medical college on Friday, triggering nationwide outrage over women’s safety in the state.

What was supposed to be a normal Friday night dinner turned into a horrific nightmare for the medical student.

According to reports, the student had stepped out of the campus at around 10 pm with a friend for dinner when she was attacked by a group of men. She is undergoing medical treatment at the nearby hospital. Her family who reached Durgapur today morning, lodged a complaint alleging gang-rape and police negligence.

"We got a call from her friends, and heard about the incident. We came here this morning and lodged a complaint with the police. I have heard that the college performed well academically, and this is why we sent our daughter to study medicine here," the student's father said.

Durgapur gang-rape: No arrests have been made

Although the Durgapur police have begun to investigate, no arrests has been made so far.

BJP MLA Lakhan Ghorai said: "From last night until now, no arrests have been made. The girl was raped it was a gang rape yet no one has been arrested so far. Therefore, the BJP Durgapur unit, along with the entire party and workers, is heading to Andal police station..."

Amit Malviya, in-charge of BJP's national information and technology department co-in-charge West Bengal, said: “The memories of the horrific rape and murder of a lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have resurfaced. A second-year medical student from IQ City Medical College and Hospital in Durgapur (West Bengal) was gang-raped in a nearby forest area by Wasif Ali and his associates.”

“The survivor, a resident of Odisha, is currently undergoing treatment, and her statement has been recorded. The brutal crime has triggered massive protests across Durgapur, with people demanding swift justice and accountability from the Mamata Banerjee government.”

'West Bengal is hell for women'

" West Bengal is not safe for women ,” he said, echoing the sentiments of several medical students, doctors, locals who have been demanding justice and accountability.

The India doctor association called it ‘Durgapur horror’ and wrote on X: “Absolutely horrifying! A young woman who came to study medicine, not fearing for her life, is now another name in India’s endless list of brutality against women. Enough of this apathy. We demand justice fast, visible, and unforgiving.”

“Unbelievable!” one X user wrote: “Another medical student gangraped in Durgapur. Even after RG Kar, no lessons were learnt. Women’s safety in Bengal is a JOKE under this regime.”

“We have become a bunch of spineless hypocrites who can’t even stand up against the injustice and brutality happening to our own in our own soil,” another user said.

Sharing an angry emoji, a third user said: “Once again, #TMC’s failure knows no bounds! After the #Abhaya rape case, now a medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was raped at a #durgapur medical college. Her family accuses West Bengal police of outright non-cooperation.”

“This is the “safety” Mamata Banerjee promises women? West Bengal has become a hell for women under TMC,” the post read.
