GATE 2026 registrations have begun for admission to postgraduate engineering programmes in various institutions, and recruitment to some government organisations. Eligible candidates can apply for the written test through the official website at gate2026.iitg.ac.in.

To submit the application form for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2026), concerned applicants should have to upload a certain set of documents, and remit the registration fee.

The required documents for GATE 2026 registration include candidates’ photograph, signature image, scanned copy of valid photo Identity Document (Aadhar, passport or pan), caste certificate, disability certificate if applicable.

Notably, all the above mentioned documents should be uploaded in a pdf format. Candidates must ensure that uploaded documents are readable and clear. “Uploading unreadable documents may lead to delays in processing the application and may lead to rejection of candidature,” as per the notification from the official website.

GATE is a national-level examination held for admission to MTech, other post graduate engineering exams at Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology (NITs), and other engineering colleges across the country. The GATE scores are also used by Public Sector Undertakings for the recruitment process as well.

IIT Guwahati will conduct the GATE 2026 from February 7 to 15 in two shifts. Forenoon session will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the afternoon shift will take place from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

The computer-based exam will comprise of 30 test papers for admission to various PG courses. As per the GATE 2026 syllabus, the institute has introduced a new sectional paper - energy science - under the engineering science subject.

GATE 2026: Documents specifications

Undergraduate candidates looking forward to getting admitted to IITs, NITs, IIITs, other engineering colleges across the country through the GATE 2026 must submit required documents for successful submission for registration forms.

Here is the specification for submission of candidates’ photograph, and signature image.

  • Upload color photograph of passport size with 3.5 cm width × 4.5 cm height.
  • The photo must cover 60-70% of candidates’ faces.
  • The background of the photograph must be white and not contain any other objects or persons.
  • The photograph must show the frontal face view looking directly into the camera and must show the forehead, eyes, nose, and chin.
  • The face in the photograph must not be covered with objects such as caps, hats, sunglasses, colored glasses, etc.
  • Normal spectacles for vision correction are allowed.
  • If the candidate normally wears spectacles, a photograph with glare on the glasses is not acceptable.
  • If the glare cannot be avoided, the spectacles must be removed.
  • Photograph can be in JPEG/JPG format with minimum aspect ratio of 0.66 and maximum aspect ratio of 0.89.
  • The maximum pixel resolution is 530 x 690 pixels and the minimum resolution is 200 x 260 pixels.
  • The file size must be a minimum of 5 kB and a maximum of 600 kB.
  • The face must be visible clearly and not covered by any cloth or shadow.
  • Head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons, but the facial features from bottom of chin to the top of forehead and both edges of the face must be clearly shown.

Specifications for Signature image

According to the notice on the official website, photographs not adhering to the specified criteria could lead to rejection of GATE application, and the fee will not be refunded.

Check the specifications for uploading signature photograph from below.

  • Upload an image of your signature in JPEG/JPG format of size with an aspect ratio (height: width) of 1 : R, where the value of R can be between 2.75 and 3.75.
  • After cropping to the mentioned size, the area of the signature must cover 70-80% of the image.
  • The signature of the candidate must be in black or dark blue color ink only.
  • The file size must be a minimum of 3 kB and maximum of 300 kB.
  • The maximum pixel resolution is 580 × 180 pixels and the minimum resolution is 250 × 80 pixels.
  • The signature must be signed only by the applicant and not by any other person.
  • If the candidate’s signature does not match with the signature at the time of the examination, the applicant could be disqualified.
