IIT Guwahati has begun the registration process for the GATE 2026. Eligible candidates can apply through the official website at gate2026.iitg.ac.in.

 The GATE 2026 date schedule is given below.

The GATE 2026 specifications for uploading a signature image are as follows. However, a mismatch between the uploaded signature and the one provided during the exam may lead to disqualification. 

• Upload a signature image in JPEG/JPG format.
• Aspect ratio (height: width) should be 1:R, where R is between 2.75 and 3.75.
• Signature should cover 70–80% of the image after cropping.
• Use black or dark blue ink only.
• File size: 3 kB to 300 kB; resolution: 250 × 80 pixels (min) to 580 × 180 pixels (max).
• Signature should be handwritten by the candidate only.

Photographs not meeting the given specifications may lead to rejection of the registration, and the application fee will not be refunded. GATE 2026 candidates are required to submit their photograph specifications as given below.

• Upload a recent, color passport-size photograph (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm) with a white background.
• The candidate’s face should cover 60–70% of the photograph.
• Show full frontal view of the face, including the forehead, eyes, nose, and chin. Head coverings are allowed only for religious reasons, but the full face must be visible.
• File format: JPEG/JPG; file size: 5 kB to 600 kB.
• Resolution: minimum 200 × 260 pixels, maximum 530 × 690 pixels; aspect ratio: 0.66–0.89.
• No caps, hats, sunglasses, or colored glasses. Normal spectacles are allowed, but glare on lenses should be avoided.

The GATE 2026 official website has made available previous years’ question papers from 2007 to 2025. Candidates can download these year-wise or in bulk to practice. Sample papers for the new Energy Science paper have also been released.

The GATE 2026 registration begins at gate2026.iitg.ac.in. The list of GATE 2026 paper combinations is shown in the table below. Candidates can register for one or two papers as per the approved combinations and must complete the application process, including fee payment and document upload, before the deadline.

The GATE 2026, conducted by IIT Guwahati, will be a three-hour computer-based exam held in multiple sessions. It will have 65 questions totalling 100 marks, divided into General Aptitude (15 marks) and subject-specific sections (85 marks). The exam will include multiple-choice, multiple-select, and numerical answer type questions, with negative marking for certain MCQs. Candidates can choose one or two papers from approved combinations, and a new subject, Energy Science (XE-I), has been added.

IIT Guwahati has introduced a new sectional paper on Energy Science (XE-1) within the Engineering Sciences (XE) test paper. The overall number of test papers remains 30. The sample paper for Energy Science has also been released online.

The GATE 2026 exam will be conducted over four days, scheduled on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. GATE 2026 will be conducted in two sessions each day. The forenoon session will be held from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the afternoon session will take place from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

There is no limit on the number of attempts for GATE. Candidates can appear for the exam any number of times, provided they meet the eligibility criteria for each attempt.

Candidates are required to upload their photograph according to the specified guidelines while registering for GATE 2026.

Candidates can apply for GATE 2026 starting from today, August 28. The registration process will remain open till September 28 for submissions without a late fee. All applications will have to completed through the official website, gate2026.iitg.ac.in.

This year, IIT Guwahati has introduced a few changes in the GATE 2026 application process. A new sectional paper, Energy Science (XE-1), has been added under the Engineering Sciences category. In addition, the GATE application fees have been revised for different categories of candidates.

Candidates will have to upload the following documents while filling the GATE 2026 application form:

• Recent photograph and signature (as per specifications)
• Caste certificate (if applicable, PDF format)
• PwD certificate (if applicable, PDF format)
• Valid photo ID (Aadhar, passport, PAN card, voter ID, or driving license)

The GATE 2026 application fee depends on the candidate’s category and the period of submission. For female candidates, as well as those belonging to SC, ST, or PwD categories, the fee is Rs 1,000 per paper if paid within the regular registration period and Rs 1,500 during the extended period. For all other candidates, including foreign nationals, the fee is Rs 2,000 per paper during the regular period and Rs 2,500 if submitted in the extended period.

GATE 2026 will be conducted on February 7, 8, 14, and 15. The exam will be held as a computer-based test for 30 papers. Qualifying candidates will be eligible for admission to postgraduate programmes at IITs, IISc Bengaluru, and other participating institutes.

GATE 2026 degree-wise eligibility criteria are given in the table below.

For a wrong answer to an MCQ, there will be negative marking. GATE 2026 marking scheme is as follows. 

• For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 will be deducted for a wrong answer.
• No negative marking for wrong answers to MSQ and NAT questions.
• No partial marking for any question.

IIT Guwahati has released the GATE 2026 sample papers for the new energy science sectional paper and previous years’ question papers on the offiical website, gate2026.iitg.ac.in. Candidates willing to pursue MTech and MArch have the option to download the GATE previous year question papers from 2007 to 2005 or year-wise PYQs from 2021 to 2025.

As per the GATE 2026 exam pattern, the CS paper will be held for a total of 100 marks, comprising questions of general aptitude carrying 15 marks, engineering mathematics of 13 marks, and subject-based questions of 72 marks. Each question will carry either 1 or 2 marks, and there will be negative marking in the MCQ questions. As per the marking scheme, 1/3 marks will be deducted for 1 1-mark MCQ, and 2/3 marks will be deducted for every 2-mark MCQ question.

IIT Guwahati will conduct the GATE 2026 exam on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, in two shifts. The forenoon shift is scheduled from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, while the afternoon shift will be held from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

GATE 2026 exam is held for 30 papers, including  Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science (CS), Electronics and Communication (EC), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), and several others. This year, IIT Guwahati introduced a new section on Energy Science within the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper.
