IIT Guwahati will conduct the GATE 2026 exam on February 7, 8, 14, and 15 at various test centres across the country. The test will be held in two shifts: the forenoon session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and the afternoon session from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
The GATE 2026 exam will be conducted for 30 test papers for admission to postgraduate programmes. This year, IIT Guwahati introduced a new energy science sectional paper under the engineering science subject.
GATE 2026 application fee for female, scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribe (ST), and persons with disabilities (PwD) categories is Rs 1,000, and other candidates have to pay Rs 2,000 for each paper. Candidates who miss the GATE 2026 registration deadline have to pay an additional fee of Rs 500 to submit their application.

The steps to apply for GATE 2026 are as follows.
- Visit the official website on gate2026.iitg.ac.in login
- Click on the GATE registration link portal and complete the registration process.
- Login credentials will be generated.
- Fill out the GATE 2026 application form.
- Upload scanned images of the requisite documents.
- Pay the GATE 2026 registration fee.
- Check all the details filled in the GATE 2026 application form.
- Submit the GATE registration 2026.

GATE 2025 specifications for signature
The GATE 2026 specifications for uploading a signature image are as follows. However, a mismatch between the uploaded signature and the one provided during the exam may lead to disqualification.
- Upload a signature image in JPEG/JPG format.
- Aspect ratio (height: width) should be 1:R, where R is between 2.75 and 3.75.
- Signature should cover 70–80% of the image after cropping.
- Use black or dark blue ink only.
- File size: 3 kB to 300 kB; resolution: 250 × 80 pixels (min) to 580 × 180 pixels (max).
- Signature should be handwritten by the candidate only.

GATE 2025: Photograph specifications for registration
Photographs not meeting the given specifications may lead to rejection of the registration, and the application fee will not be refunded. GATE 2026 candidates are required to submit their photograph specifications as given below.
- Upload a recent, color passport-size photograph (3.5 cm × 4.5 cm) with a white background.
- The candidate’s face should cover 60–70% of the photograph.
- Show full frontal view of the face, including the forehead, eyes, nose, and chin. Head coverings are allowed only for religious reasons, but the full face must be visible.
- File format: JPEG/JPG; file size: 5 kB to 600 kB.
- Resolution: minimum 200 × 260 pixels, maximum 530 × 690 pixels; aspect ratio: 0.66–0.89.
- No caps, hats, sunglasses, or colored glasses. Normal spectacles are allowed, but glare on lenses should be avoided.

GATE 2026 Registration: Exam pattern
The GATE 2026, conducted by IIT Guwahati, will be a three-hour computer-based exam held in multiple sessions. It will have 65 questions totalling 100 marks, divided into General Aptitude (15 marks) and subject-specific sections (85 marks). The exam will include multiple-choice, multiple-select, and numerical answer type questions, with negative marking for certain MCQs. For a wrong answer to an MCQ, there will be negative marking. GATE 2026 marking scheme is as follows.
- For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 will be deducted for a wrong answer.
- No negative marking for wrong answers to MSQ and NAT questions.
- No partial marking for any question.

GATE 2026: CS paper pattern
As per the GATE 2026 exam pattern, the CS paper will be held for a total of 100 marks, comprising questions of general aptitude carrying 15 marks, engineering mathematics of 13 marks, and subject-based questions of 72 marks. Each question will carry either 1 or 2 marks, and there will be negative marking in the MCQ questions. As per the marking scheme, 1/3 marks will be deducted for 1 1-mark MCQ, and 2/3 marks will be deducted for every 2-mark MCQ question.

GATE 2026: Two paper combinations
GATE 2026 | Candidates will have to choose a paper from those given in the two-paper combination list, and will be allowed to register. IIT Guwahati may open up additional two-paper combinations at a later date, subject to the availability of infrastructure and scheduling feasibility, as per an update on the official website.

GATE 2026 registration last date
IIT Guwahati will close the GATE 2026 registration deadline on September 28. The last date for GATE 2026 registration with late fee payment is October 9.
